Hi all,

I was out in the woods earlier today with this beast, got hung up on rutted road trying to reverse back, so I could rehook up on my wagon.

There was a nasty loud snap sound came from the steering box, then the steering wheel just would turn around and around 360 degrees and no movement at all in the front wheels, well actually it would catch abit for left turn, but that didn't last long, ( was able to bulldoz my way outa the woods a ways before I lost total steering, though my wagon is still left in the blinking woods!).

From what I can see the steering boxes on these tractors looked to be one sealed unit, can you gain access to inside the box, maybe from the bottom.

I can't afford to buy a whole new steering box for this bloody piece of crap.

Do I have to junk the thing because of a broken steering box.

Let me know if you have not fixed your problem. I have a detailed breakdown of the steering system. If your gonna junk the tractor let me know that also, I have a Belarus 250 on here on my farm with my Fords and IH's and it always gets the job done. Good rig. Just make sure to widen out the tires on them!

Good luck,

EF

About 2 months ago the same thing happened to me. I was towing my Belarus 400A to get it started and it popped and I totally lost steering. I had it towed to a local shop. He jumped it and once running drove it around the yard. He called me and asked what the problem was. He couldn't find any, so he changed the oil and sent it home. Go figure.

somehow a human being put that box together and somehow a human being can fix it

if its cast, there had to be some sort of seam for the Russians to get the guts in there, pressure washer might show where that seam is

on Fiat 850 they the welded diffential housings together after assembly, I have seen good mechanics open them up, fix them and seal them back up nice as can be

You are having to live through the typical problems of not having real manuals for your tractor. IF you had ordered all 3 manuals when the tractor was new, now you would have no problems. Each tractor I acquire, first step is to get actual manufacturer's manuals: 1-Operator Manual 2-Repair Manual 3-Parts Manual. Often times the parts manual is the ulitmate solution with its exploded views. I used to try IT manuals but they are a waste of time. Tom

You don't need a genuine Belarus manual, they are all in pidgieon Russian and well hard to understand, the best I have seen are from the US importers of the cra, sorry I mean tractors!

Take it apart and see what broke. Then ph. belarus and see if the parts are worth it. There is a few of those around you could probably find a use parts for it.

Friend of mine's JD 2010 had some thing break in his steering box. We took it apart and found the broken rail and gear. JD wanted like a $1000 for the parts but then said they no longer service them~!! We ended up finding used parts and got it going.

Hi Hayman,

That's just the thing, can I get inside the bloody steering box. What is the usual way that you gain access to the guts of these things.

I just came in from it a little while ago, was able to get it closer to the house, but there is a big hill just at the top of the field and I thought better of trying to come down that with no steering. It was very interesting enough experience getting it to where it's at now, when ya can't steer the damn thing, thank god for those wheel trenches in the road.

Anyway was looking over the steering box again, and it is indeed one whole cast unit including the steering column, so if there isn't a bolted on panel on the bottom, I can't for the life of me see how ya would access the inside.

I just can't afford any big pay out for this thing, lots of other problems with it.

Take a word from someone who owns one, the wise thing is for you not to own one.

Thanks for the comments guys, I had hoped maybe that someone has had this problem before, I"ve been through many things with this blinking tractor, but never this yet.

I inherited this thing from my father, who had it in the depths of the woods for years and as far as I know, never had a problem in this regard.
Though the bloody steering box was mega worn, it took almost a full turn just to get some response to the front wheels.

The tractor is still in the woods at the moment, having to hire a guy in my area with a backhoe to haul it out for me sometime the first of the week.

As far as I can remember the steering box and steering wheel column are all one cast solid piece, though the steering column might screw out of the steering box, but for sure you could see all the steering box but the bottom of it, and it"s all one solid bloody piece. So if ya can"t access it from the bottom, then it would all have to be replace with another whole unit.

So this is what I was wondering, can you access the inside of this steering box, does it indeed come apart somehow.

This is a 1978, model 250, shipped to the Canadian market, which from what I understand is the same model types sold in the Russian market.
I believe for the US market they had to meet more rigid requirements (meaning slightly better built units), so where a little different.

Get that box apart and see what broke. if it is a recirculating ballnut type.. it could be anything from a thrust washer to the ballnut, or a stripped sector gear.. or broke worm gear.

I'd suggest you email your question to belarustractorclub@yahoogroups.com There are some Belarus users and experts at the site that can probably help you.

Hard to suggest things without seeing the broken part, but it may be time to put a local machine shop to work buikding/rebuilding a part for you. Tom
