I am going to get a second tractor for small stuff like pulling hay wagons, moving equipment or even mowing when the weather is right.Instead of getting one of the newer compact I think I might want to get an older tractor.I want a diesel and I like farmalls and the IH that allen is posting pictures of.What are some general tips to look for when getting an older tractor that I wont have to work on?Anything I should notice about gears, clutch, brakes? What to look for when it starts up,what leaks are terminal and which ones are not? What are some good models to look for?And what price range should a good older tractor be in?

I sure like the bigger D and hundreds series AC's. Just about any IH I have seen was ready for major work (everyone keeps them till they are used up). Might find a JD 3xxx series fairly resonable with a lot of life left in it yet. Have to be a good deal to consider an older ford. However what ever you end up with make sure it has some weight to it. A 2-3000lb tractor (ford hunderd and early thousand series) isn't enough. Light duty for wagons may not sound like much but they weigh any where from 3-5000lbs. You get a light weight tractor and your not going to be happy. I'd look for something in or above 5000lbs.

As far as mechnically goes, if you are not so inclined, hire a mechanic to look it over (just to much to list). At a min, find some who knows the model to look at it with ya.

Just my 2 cents, The depreciation on a new "couch potato" tractor will cost you a lot more than the few repairs you MAY have to do to a WELL BOUGHT old tractor. If you don't beat it to death, an old tractor, at worst, will bring what you paid if ever you sell it.( again, assuming it was well bought). The feeling you get when using one is priceless!!!
