Steering broke - maybe, Ford 9N

I have a Ford 9N and it's my first "real" tractor. We were using it and got stuck in some sand. I backed the tractor out of the spot and turned hard right. The sand caught one of the front tires and turn it even harder to the right. Now I have the right side tire turned right when the left tire is straight and vice versa.

My question is, do I have to tear apart the whole steering column to fix this? It seems like the steering still works but is just out of alignment.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

-Tim

Right from the book.Caused by exteme turn to reset, dissconect both drag linksat the steering arms and move left arm rear ward as far as possible and right arm forward to unmesh the gears.. re-engage both sectors.check syncronization observe when both arms are parell and pointing slighly rearward. Thats from the horses one end or the other.

I guess I was just a bit grouchy last night! It appears folks simply don't read through the replies to a thread, before posting. That can happen when people post at baout the same time, but when it happens HOURS apart, I always wonder why the poster didn't scan through the previous posts!

I'm up in north central ND, and while we could use a little rain, it's not to bad up here yet. It has been so darned wet here for 12 or more years, we have had ground water oozing out of the ground in our farm buildings, making them useless for machinery storage, so this break in the wet cycle is welcome.

An area lake has risen about 26 feet, to levels not seen in like 100 years.

"On early model 9N when steering gear is turned to either extreme, this may cause sectors to jump out of mesh."

"To synchronize the sectors without removing steering housing, disconnect both drag links at steering arms and move left arm rearward as far as possible, and right arm in opposite direction to unmesh gears. Re-engage both sectors with steering shaft pinion, and check synchronism by observing whether steering arms are parallel, and point slightly rearward when gear is in mid or straight ahead position. Reconnect drag links, and adjust same if necessary."

To Bob I posted after you just to reassure Tim that there were 2 people that knew how to fix it with all the I'donts. If that offends you too bad.

Thanks so much for all of your advice. If it's something I can fix without tearing apart the steering column, I'll consider myself very fortunate.

I ordered the I&T manual today so hopefully that will help as well.

Thanks again!

On early model 9N when steering gear is turned to either extreme, this may cause sectors to jump out of mesh. Which can be put back into sinc. without removing steering housing.

You need to find a manual for you 9N, it will give details on how to put back into sinc. I will see if I can get my scanner hooked back up sometime today. Or maybe "Old" can scan page and email it to you...give him something to do.:>)

Give me something to do LOL, like I don't have to much now, read your other post. LOL. I get to go fix 2 sickle mowers, at least one tractor, redo a bale shoot and all of that between 2 and 3:30 probably will only get the one sickle mower done in that time so the guy can start cutting again and work on the other stuff as he mowers, I hope

yes you have a problem. to fix take off hood then the top half of steering gear whenyou do that the arms to the steering arms cam stay in lower half move the wheels to strait ahead and put back togeather be sure tha lower bearing is in place. there is a lot of things in the way you may have to take off. becareful not to drop any things into the transmision it is open below there

You may have sheared a key way up at the front spindle and if so thats why one is turned and the other isn't. Now this is just an educated guess but its also the easiest place to check since its out in the open. Another way to make sure is look at both sides and the arms that come out of the steering box. when one of the tires is stright ahead do the arms on the side line uo whith each other. That is if you could look through the steering box. Hpoe you understand what I'm trying to say. If they are its probably in the spindle area

If thats the case you probably broke something inside of the steering box. Can't help you much there since I have always been lucky and never had to open one of them up. But if you find you need parts I have a 2N that I'm parting out and the steering box is still there
