Morning guys. Been stayen out on the farm a couple days now. Missed some good ones on here. My new field with no rain had so many weeds I finally mowed the whole thing before they went to seed. If it rains now it could come up good, but it looks like I may be putting in a fall seeding here. Had about 1200.00 just in the seed. Sure wont rent that Brillion again. How long is that alfalfa seed going to wait for water to germinate? I have about 20% overall in the field now. suggestions?? Have a good day out there, Bob

Here in Southwest MO I always had good luck using the heavy field roller (5000#) before the drill, then taking the tubes off the seed box on the drill, letting the seed fall from the box and pulling a 2 x 6 behind the drill to cover the seed

Yes Sir,

I did that this spring and it really worked well.

My problem came on the other patch last fall when I ran the packer behind the drill. Never again. :>)

the alfalfa seed will still be there
the alfalfa plants that have grown won't really start doing the autotoxicity thing to neighboring plants weeds and other small alfalfa plants until about 18 months old - therefore - keep the stuff mowed - the new stuff can still grow for a long time yet

Bob,

I'm with you as I did the same darned thing last fall; even entertained the notion of plowin' the whole mess under, but finally it turned around and looks great now.

Ya gotta just forget about it for a year; it's gonna come.

That darned packer sure doesn't do it any good, does it? I'll never pull that dumb stunt again either. I can still see right to the line where the packer ran. Just stunts it 'er something. :>(

Thanks guys, I needed some encourging words! (there is a song about that). Told the wife that is the best news I have had about that field. Sure gets one down to see it looking so bad. Seen a truck pull to end of drive the other day, turned around and left. May have been anyone but I felt it was someone coming to laugh at the weed farm. Oh Allan, If you still need a project, I have one for you, reasonable to. Sorry no picture but can get one. Its a 1948 Case D that is most all there, needs engine overhaul and some body work but not bad. I have it now for 3 years and just not getting to it and have not had the "get er done" feeling. Have fun today, Bob
p.s. I got my 3 year old grandson and I am taking him to the farm for a while to play on big tractors and get dirty with me. Nana is coming along to keep us from going overboard.

Hey Allan,
My cousin put his alfafa in and them pulled a packer to "firm" up the seed bed. Not a good thing around here with clay in the soil. I just drag some dirt over it and let it lay - that seems to work the best for me.

Well now fella"s. I did it this way. Just before seeding the alfalfa I went over the ground with a springtooth. My alfalfa seeder was an old Dempster drill and had no seed tubes or furrow openers. I chained a 4by4 behind the seeder. When I was done seeding I harrowed the seed in. I had towchains tied on behind the harrow. After that I was talked into using a packer on the field. Best stand of alfalfa I ever had plus I got alot of seat time. I put on about 7#"s seed/acre.
