Here are a couple pics from today. As soon as we get done with the straw we will drill the beans.

This is the first year we have done straw, a neighbor wanted some so he used his JD and baled it for us. Got 100 bales an acre and watched the deer play all day.

Straw is worth good money in the northeast. Farmers figure the grain pays the costs and the straw is the profit.

No kidding...

I pay $7.50 / 40# (if that) small square.

My garden doesn't have the greatest amount of soil, so I grow potatoes above ground in straw...looking at the row today, need another bale since the plants are growing like nobodies business (some of my 'tater plants are 2-1/2 feet high!).

These better be darn good spuds by the time I harvest them :)

Wow Matt!!!

I hate to even say this but out of the field is $1.25 and from the barn $2.00 per 40# bale.

Oh, I can figure as much!

Unfortunately, no grain farmers around here so no local competetion -- it's all trucked in.

Hay's cheaper at $2-3/bale for what I buy...but doesn't do as nice of a job and I get more "weed" seeds in the garden.

Some of the farmers around here truck their straw to make the extra money but this being our first year we are doing good to get it out of the field.

We have sold 2000 bales out of the field with another 300 spoken for and hauled 800 to the barn.

Hopefully we will finish today.
