Ford 4000 LP Tractor Problem

The Ford propane fueled tractor will only run about 15 minutes after each refill before needing to be refilled again.

When the propane company comes out to refill the tractor, it will run for about 8 hours, which would need to be done each day - costly and impractical.

Tractor recently serviced. Called several tractor repair shops. None had experience with propane. I believe that one suggested it could be a pressure problem during filling.

Any insight or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the input. Lack of a liquid withdrawal or wet line is likely the problem.

Next question is does anyone know where we can find a liquid or wet line? We called the propane company and they do not do anything like it.

Any other ideas for the exact procedure for filling liquid. Again, thanks.

AD, First question to you is....Are you sure your nurse tank has a liquid (Wet) line. A lot of tanks out there only have vapor lines. Meaning that if you put your unloading valve on the same valve the gas company fill into it may very well be vapor only the opposite way. My parents main LP tank for the house is that way.
I think that is your problem.
For even if you weren't getting the empty tank pressure down enough, If left overnight it would fill on its own by the tank temp/pressure as they cool down after a hot day!
You said the tractor only ran for about 15 minutes or so after you filled it..... So when very empty, you should be able to push in on the center porition of the liquid and vapor valves they should move freely since there is little to no pressure on the tank. So that eliminates the valves sticking, Also you said it ran for a while after you filled it, So the vlaves are working enough to get vapor through!!!
I still think your tank is giveing you vapor only!
Hollar back.
Later,
John A.

Jones is on the right track. The truck filled the tractor using the liquid line. Whatever you are filling it with is filling vapor only. You need a liquid kit on your storage tank to fill your tractor. Attach the fill hose, open the valve and the bleeder and fill to 80% liquid.

If you only have a vapor fill hose on your fill tank your tractor will run until the vapor pressure goes down and there is not enough pressure to force the liquid into the regulator. You must fill your tractor tank with liquid propane.

Depends on what size tank you have on the tractor for how long it will run. The tank guage could be bad also and not being filled enough. Should never fill the tank over 70-80% to allow room for expansion or you may experience the pop off valve opening during warm weather. When it reaches 70-80% fill then liquid fuel should come out of the fill bleeder valve. Sometimes the tube can break off inside tank on the fill bleeder valve also. You need a nurse tank on your property for fuel storage of 250-300 gallons or larger to fill from. You could have a tank on a trailer for on farm use only but some places won't fill a trailer tank and it's illegal to drag a LP trailer tank yourself down highways now. Could use it for home heating or shop also but make sure the storage tank you buy or get from a LP distributor has a wet line in it for liquid filling for the tractor. You'll also need a liquid fill line. Is the vaporizer/regulator working properly? If the hoses or thermostat or hot engine water isn't flowing thru to vaporize liquid LP that could be your problem. You run on vapor to start and after it has warmed running on liquid to vaporizer correct? If only running on vapor and not switching to liquid you won't get all the LP fuel out of the tank and use it's capacity. Most Fords had a Zenith LP setup or is yours IMPCO ? You should have almost full tank pressure to the regulator inlet. I say almost because it shouldn't let full tank pressure out and the excess flow valve safety disc on inside of tank valve should slam shut disabling flow. You only turn the valves on & off slowly to keep the excess flow valve from shutting off all the way or partially. Excess flow valve discs seldom give problems on tank valves but it can happen. Out of regulator to carburetor should only have 8-12 oz. pressure. Fuel line hoses can also collapse internally causing flow problems. Only use special hose and fittings rated for LP.
