Morning all;
In this part of Shropshire on the light sand soils a wide variety of "new" crops are being grown - herbs & vegetables.
This is the front view of a lettace harvesting rig, mounted on the front 3 point of JD tractor fitted with ultra low speed creep gearbox.
The workers cut the lettace by hand and put them into revolving cups to be sorted by workers on the platform.
2 more photos in sequence. Cheers David

I'm involved with a company that makes the front bit of the harvester. A tank of bleach solution is carried on the machine and, as each lettuce is placed in the cup, bleach is injected into the cut stem to increase shelf life.

The ones from the machines we make go straight into packs in the trailer and straight from field to the supermarket. The machines are cutting and packing 40,000 lettuce per day.

To John & Jon;
I know it looks wrong & wierd. That tractor at the back is hooked to the trailer with the square canvas top. The rear of the trailer is hooked to the processing trailer. So the JD in the middle of the rig is driving & towing everything whilst its harvesting.
The forward speed is only a few feet per minute.
The rear tractor engine is not running, so the front axle is "locked" straight so it wont wander.
The whole rig is running in wheel tracks which keeps evrything in line.
As soon as the trailer is full, its disconected from the rig, and a driver jumps into the cab and takes the full trailer back to the yard. Another empty trailer & tractor is backed up to the rig, hitched to the rig and they carry on harvesting within a couple of minutes Hope this makes it clear. I had to stand and watch the thing for a while myself to work it all out. LOL.
Cheers David

Yes - this is the front of the rig. The picking platform is going forwards. Look at other 3 photos in sequence - front, middle & rear views.
The tractor at the back + trailer is being pulled backwards by the tractor in the centre of the rig.

I looked at all 3 pictures and what I do not understand is why is there a tractor on the back being pulled along.
