The Big 4 featured on RFD Channel was found at a Misc. machinery lot on the east side of Somanauk IL. on rt. 34 and was restored and now resides in Plainfield Il. The big 4 used front axles from surplus Army 6x6 trucks and was steered Hydraulicaly. It used a Cummins JT 175 Engine and was capable of pulling a 6x14" Plow at a time era when a 3 x14" Plow was the normal size Plow on most farms. It was Farm built and never became a success as a commercial Venture however it did enspire the builders of the Big Bud series of Tractors and they were the giants of their times. The Big Bud 747 dwarfs The Deere,Versatile and Case/Ih and other Articulated, 4 Wheel Giants common to most large Farm operations of late.

Wasnt the guy who found it the son or nephew of the guy who built it? I know the guy in the wheelchair was related too.

Can't recall the names of the two farmers who along with an mechanical engineer designed and built the first Big 4 but I do know that it was built in the winter of 1953 in a Farm shop near Elwood Il. about 25 miles from where I grew up. It was the coffeeshop talk of the time according to my Dad. There were only 8 of them built and the last two were used as experimental beds for one of the major farm equipment Mfg's at that time. Later on one of the Big Bud 747 develpers often referred to the Big 4 when discussing developement of that machine. It is referenced that the one Restored and featured on the recent RFD Channel Tractor Show was the original 1st one but that is debateable. We believe it may have been the 3rd. one built. I only remember ever seeing two but from my memory the ones I saw were painted the same color as Farmall Tractors.

I must have seen that one 30 times now and never paid any attention to the fact that more than 1 was ever built by the farmer who built it.
