I needed a lawnmower, and my dad had one here in the barn, So I got it running after sitting for a good ten years. Purrs like a kitten, Only one problem. I have to jump it to start it, Once its running it will run forever. I shut it off, go to start it, Battery is dead. Do you think it is a bad battery, Since it will run after being started? Any Ideas?

RULES FOR A LAWNMOWER BATTERY: (1) keep clean, (2) put on a 2 amp charger once a month during winter month's and keep in a reasonably warm place (3) Disconnect from equip when not using for an extended period of time (4) NEVER but NEVER leave in a state of complete discharge or the plates WILL sulfate and then it is BYE,BYE Battery?? I got a lawn and garden battery that is going on it's 5th year (VERY RARE THAT HAPPENS??)

Most older lawn mowers only use the battery to start them and nothing else, they have mags on them.

The best I can get from a lawnmower battery is 2 yrs.The engine keeps running because the generator obviously charges supplying ignition spark. You need a battery.~brad

Kohler engines and others reqire a battery that has at least 6V to activate the electrical system. Even though it starts with a jump start once the jumper is disconnected the engine will die if the 6V is not present and thats a fact.

Do you remove the battery through the winter, or while the mower is in storage? Batteries last longer that way. Store the battery in the house through the winter, and not on the cement basement floor. It'll die sooner if left in the mower, if it is outside in freezing temperatures, or if it's sitting on the ground, or even on just a concrete floor. Put an inch board under it to get it off the floor, and it'll survive the winter just fine.

Starters draw a large amount of current in a big surge. Your battery could very well be good enough for the much lighter loads of energizing alternator windings and charging a coil for spark, or your mower may very well have a mag (though I haven't seen mags on mowers since the 80s.)

Either which way, I'd get a new battery. Sounds like this one is pretty weak. You can always try adding water and trickle-charging (<=10A) it overnight, but in the end if your battery is 10 years old, it won't last much longer anyway. Storing the battery as described above, I've gone 8 years on a single mower battery, but 10 is a stretch.
