I have a 1940 Massey-Harris 101, serial #258239.
I know it should have a 201 Chrysler flathead in it but, I think it may have been replaced. The engine serial # stamped in the block is unreadable. I would like to know for sure which size engine I have in this tractor. Is it possible to figure this out by using the casting numbers in the block or head. Thanks, J501

Thanks to everyone for your replys. The engine is a Chrysler. The distributor is mounted on the side. The head on this engine measures 23" and the block is 25". I read on some other forums that the small block is 23" and the large block is 25". I'm not sure whether they mean the block or the head. Some Massey people told me to measure the head. J 501

That front tub will take almost any engine. If it is a Chrysler, measure the overall length of the block, the truck engines (which were often transplanted into those tractors) are longer than the original Chrysler industrial. Sorry I don't know the length of the various engine models.

Ok now to tell you a little more there was 3 MH 101s. There was the 101 JR, the 101SR and the 101 super. The 101JR had a 4 cylinder engine it. The 101SR had a contentail engine in it with a distutor in the head and then there was the 101 super with a distubutor on the side of the engine. So now which do you have, the 4 cylinder or the 6 cylinder with the distubutor in the head or on the side

In addition to what you stated, there was also the original 101 with no suffix. It predates the Jr. and Sr. and was built and sold as a single model. The 101 had the Chrysler 201, Sr. Chrysler 217, and the Super Continental 226.

OK,he said he had a Chrysler,so it is a 6 CYL.,Massey only put two sizes in,201 &217 but there were a LOT of 241's and 250?s and bigger put in and run back in the 40's and 50's.So it is going to take someone with a Chrysler number book.
