Mr. Consumer thinks "Oh, maintenance-free, that means it takes care of itself!" The battery company's best money-maker. Instead of adding water to a battery to fix a problem, you have to buy a new one. What a grand idea. Ranks right up there with the sale of bottled water.

some maintenance free batteries do have removeable caps to check the water level and add as necessary. i have one in my truck. they still need to have terminals cleaned as needed also and i check the charging rate occasionaly to make sure the system is ok. however, i do replace my batteries every 3-4 years wheather they are good, marginal or bad. that way i don"t have any worries about getting stranded with a bad battery. i do agree however that maint. free batteries are another gimmick for the consumer to spend money on a false sense of security. and we all know what battery warranties are like.

I have to agree with you, a number of things come to mind. You can't check the wter/acid so you can't keep tabs on how your changeing system is working when you only have an idiot light. Plus you can't add freash acid to the battery to get a few more months out of it when it is going south on you. Years ago J.C. Pennys had a forever battery with a life time warrenty well I had one and they never did replace as they should have when it went bad, they did give me a new battery when it went bad but it had a 3 or 4 year warrenty which I think was wrong they should be giveing me a new one every time it goes bad but that how life works.

A properly used maintenance free battery should provide good service. Batteries only lose water when you over charge them or charge too fast.

Heck, the batteries with caps on them on our 2590 Case finally gave up the ghost this spring -- only 7 years after they were put in.

Not to mention the maintenance free battery that came from the factory in my Dad's 98 F-150 is still going strong as well.

The Delco battery that came in the wifes 1998 Olsdmobile Rejency is still going at 100,400+ miles. So they can't be all bad.
