I recall Allan awhile back talking about a disease he had or knew of about having old tractors. Well I guess I must have it.
Was out on the country last night with a friend tending his dad's cows. His dad is in the hospital with cancer and is not expected to live thru the weekend.
The place is already in his name...dad did this when he came down sick.
Walking along a row of irrigation pipe and came upon an old Case L in the weeds. He said they used to have it to run the water pump but they bought a bigger pump with a motor on it. Tractor had been setting for years...but does not look bad.
The fenders are bent up at the rear and the metal wheels have been cut off and rubber tires installed.
I turned the crank and it's free. The mag is even still hot.
I ask him what he planned to do with it and he said scrap. I offered to buy it rather than see it melted down and he gave it to me on the spot.
Now...ya gotta be really sick to want old iron like that. No idea what it weighs, but am going after it when I get back from Indiana next month.
Man...gotta stay out of fence rows, pipe rows and tall weeds....

i have that sickness too. last year I saw a picture in the photos of a later model case vac that was all burned. it was sitting in the garage when some s.o.bs. set his house on fire. later the tractor was advertised on here for sale. it had complete eagle hitch with center link, drawbar and one pair of wheel weights. i wanted those parts to put on my 51 vai. i bought it from my neighbor. it was sitting 15 ft. from his garage when it burned down. it still has some paint on it. i made an offer of $225. he finally called and said i could have it for that. i drove 540 miles,30 miles north of Grand Rapids Mi. to get it. i stayed saturday night in a motel in Holland. when i first saw it i thought it was worse. the neighbor man drug it out with the wheels sliding. i backed the trailer up to it,hooked the winch cable to it and drug it up onto the trailer. he had his tractor behind it in reverse pushing till it spun out in that sandy ground. my winch is a Ramsey REP 8000 and the battery wasn't the strongest and that was about all it wanted to do. the man told me the tractor had been restored and the engine had been redone by a case dealer. i took out the plugs and put some WD40 in it,took of the grill and radiator, put a snap-on box end wrench on the crank nut and kept pulling and pushing till it moved. i turned it over some then filled it with automatic tranny oil. a lot of guys called about it but i was the only one to make an offer. I hated to see it go to China. after i pulled it off the trailer one back wheel rim came off. i jacked it up to put it back on but it is so warped it doesn't fit but the axles turn. i found the manufacture date stamped on the wheel. tractor is a 52,the one that is so hard to find sheet metal for. the grill is almost perfect, not a dent. charley.

I've never been fortunate enough to have someone give me an old tractor. It's probably just as well, I hardly have room for what I do have. Consider yourself lucky, I am not that familiar with a Case L, but I still want one.

Don't know a thing about an L either...but it's not going to be melted down anytime soon.
It may just set in the barn for awhile...may throw a feed sack on the metal seat...give the other half's cat a place to sleep rather than the 656 seat.

I've got a pair of Farmall Hs, both have serious problems but together they would make one good tractor. Only problem with that is that the left over parts would eventually get melted down, and there would be one less H in the world. I suppose eventually I will do it, but it will take a bit of arguing with myself.

I like to call it an iron deficiency.

Like I posted elsewhere. My wallet needs an idiot light because I know it is below the add mark.

It's a really bad affliction to catch.

I've poured money into four of the old devils and still think I need just one or two more.

Talked to a guy last night who has an old tractor for sale. He says the darned thing is completely wore out, is one step from the junk pile and will take a pile of money to repair.

I still think I want it; what's wrong with this picture?

It's a sickness, I tell ya; it's a sickness. :>)

Yeah, i have the Allan disease, only about lawn and garden tractors! I find some old wreck, buy it, or haul it away, for a song, take it home, and either fix it up, or use the parts or engines to fix another one! Has my wife rather disgusted, but -well-aww, she's a good old girl, hate to lose her, or my tractors! And, the other day she backed our 95 Buick Century sedan into our large concrete bird-bath, and smashed in the big, one piece tail-light assembly! AURRGH! That was an eye-roller! Got prices for a used one, anywhere from $50 to $400! Got the one for $50, better shape than the one she smashed last year, and $50 cheaper! and used tractors paid for both! Rustyj

You got it, and no matter what you wont get rid of it. If you will yourself to pass one up, you will mentally kick yuorself for years. Just fight a little shy of the cockle-burs. (unless you see a good piece of Iron in there). lol
