I passed on a flail mower over the weekend that I'm wondering if I should have bought. Are these things any good for mowing off CRP ground? I've never seen one in action and know nothing about them.

I use an old 5 foot wide Brady flail behind Alice, my WD45 for very heavy brush hogging--dense 6 ft tall 4"dia sagebrush and it works great. It chops about 75 percent down to splinters. It would probably get more if I could lower it closer to the ground but then I'd be catching rocks that don't chop so good. It does take every bit of power Alice has to offer though and it would really help if the old gal had a low range creeper gear.

there is no way they handle heavy stuff like a rotary mower, they work best on meadows and lawns that are routinley mown. I think you would be really dissapointed on CRP ground with a flail mower unless they have new models with some sort of different engenerring that I am un-aware of.

They take more power than a brush hog , but do a whole lot better job and are a whole lot safer when you hit something. I have used them in brush like briar bushes and very small trees. If trees are very big just pull them out first with a chain.

Flail mowers are good for cutting weeds and tall grass and they leave a fairly decent finish, not quite as good as a finish mower but still quite presentable. They are not good in brush, tho, but if all you have to cut is heavy grass and weeds, they are better than a brush hog since they leave a better quality cut.
