I've got a problem (long post)

My aunt asked this weekend if I'd be interested in some of her late husband's equipment. She said if I was interested, her and her late husband's mother and brother were going to give me a disk, spring tooth harrow/ field cultivator, and at least one tractor, maybe more. I told her I was thrilled they thought of me first and I'd love to have the equipment. Now the problems, the disk is a 18-20 foot Kewannee unit and the cultivator is 20-24 foot wide, can't remember the brand. Both of these were pulled behind an Minn-Mo G850 gasser (Oliver 1755) in fairly level black dirt, I don't think my Oliver 1650 diesel could handle these in the rolling clay ground that I'm playing with. Another problem is the equipment is in NE Iowa and I'm in Central Iowa. I could possibly pull them home with my 3/4 ton, but it's just shy of 2hrs taking the interstate going the speed limit. I also think getting a semi to haul the equip. would be very costly seeing how both the disk and cult. would require wide load permits. I believe the tractor they want to give me is the Oliver 770, the Minn-Mo G850 and an Oliver 60 and the Super77 w/ a loader might be included too. I'd really like to move up that way and try to get started in farming, but I haven't been able to find a decent job with good wages up in the area yet. Another problem is storage space for the tractors. Right now I'm forced to park my 1650 and a Farmall H outside, I will not allow any of these tractors to be without cover. I sure hate having to make decisions.

I dont think an oliver 1755 would pull a 20 foot cultivator. We use 2john deere 8650's to pull a 22 foot cultivator and thats pushing 250 horsepower.

Sounds like a nice day for a tractor ride.

Couple of suggestions. Plot your route on County roads and then drive it with a pickup watching for narrow bridges, mail boxes etc.

No wide load permits or signs needed. You are a implement of husbandry and are allowed these variances.

Have fun!!

Don't be hesitant to pull them home with a tractor or your pickup. I pulled a 24 foot field cultivator from Fairfax (southwest of Cedar Rapids) to near Osage with a pickup. I just went on gravel roads and small blacktop roads; no problem. You will find a way to keep them covered. Good luck.

If the price is right, you can always find a way to move them- if they're free...the price is more than right. Disc likely has wings, FC of that size usually has a 14 foot center plus wings. Both can be narrowed up for use. Use the tgransport locks after raising w/ hyd. Hitching the two together and using the biggest tractor for a drive home makes a lot of sense- then trailer the smaller tractor(s).

All of that stuff will come apart if you are willing to do it,lay it on a trailer and take it home,no big deal otherwise take back roads and pack wheel bearings and just pull them home no big deal have done it lots of times over the years.

Just a thought, You could hook the cultivator behind the disc and the disc to the tractor and make sure you have plenty of gas money and make a road trip of it on the back roads. It would take awile but if the equipment is in good condition it would be cheaper than having it hauled and you would get to see the country side at a slower pace..

Rich, interesting problem to have! That is quite a list of equipment. Is there any chance you could look around and find some inexpensive space under cover; like a hayshed not full or a dairy loafing barn not being used? Is there a way for you to get access to a suitable trailer and disassemble some of the field equipment and haul it back? Good luck with whatever you decide to do...Ben
