Been considering a utility vehicle, but there"s just so many out there now. A buddy just bought a Mule and he seems to like it, but it"s not as fast as say a Yamaha Rhino or Polaris Ranger. But I can get mule quite a bit cheaper. Do all these things come with the belt drive automatic transmission?? I never have been fond of those. What other brands and models should I be looking at?? Thanks.

Just like brands of tractors, different strokes for different folks... But, some time ago my brother and i looked at most if not all of the UV's and ended up with a Diesel Mule. Second runner up today would be the Kubota. (More on that later)

The diesel mule to me seems to be best for a "work" vehicle, and the Rhino would be my choise for a "play" vehicle.

The diesel in the Mule is made by Diahasu and is a proven diesel on par with the Kubota's... Tons of these engines are sold by B&S and used in all kinds of aplications. The Mules belt drive does NOT have problems and it's NEVER slipped or acted up in anyway, and with near 500 hours on the origional belt i'd say if there was problems it would have shown up by now.

Lately i've been toying with the idea of getting a UV for my place, and i've once again looked at them all with work in mind. I'm still convinced the diesel Mule is the one for me, and the Kubota comes in second. I just don't like the way the Kubota feels when you decelerate through the hystat, i also don't like the 3 speed sub tranny... The Mule works perfectly with a hi-lo and it's still my first choise in a work UV.

BTW, i didn't pick the Ranger because of Polaris' spotty reliability that just doesn't seem to go away. Personally i'm not going to take a chance on one, as we keep all of our tools for many years, and the Polaris' around here cost too much to own when they get older.

My wife and my mother have a JD Gator 6x4 diesel that they use at their horse boarding barn, pure and total junk. For what it cost, around $11,000 if I remember correct, it should be a hell of a machine. We have demo'ed the new Kubota RTV 900 and the Gator will soon be traded on one. Way better machine. We have three other Kubota machine's and they are tough! The thing I like about Kubota's in they build all the parts, engine, transmission, driveline, frame, body, hydraulics, everything. I know they are more money, but a lot of times you get what you pay for.

Not what your talkin about but I`ve got a 4x4 s-10 blazer I go fencin in , go check cows , hunting etc. Heat and air and keeps my tools out of the weather and there are a lot of`em around . Alot better ride than the 6x6 Ranger we have and cost a whole lot less money !! I`d get rid of the Ranger and keep the Blazer if I had to sell one .

The ultimate in low-buck utility vehicles is a $500. golf cart with a box on the back and/or a receiver hitch bolted on.

It won't do everything a Mule will, but it will take an amazing amount of abuse, doesn't need licence or insurance, and is a much safer alternative to a tractor for young and inexperienced drivers.

Mind you, the $500 dollar cart probably costs three times that because of demand.

My neighbor has a new Mule 3010; rides very rough, can hardly get across rough ground. Polaris Ranger 4x4 has independent rear suspension vs Mule dependent. Rear suspension travel: Ranger has 9 inches travel vs 2.8 inches Mule. Front susp travel: Ranger has 8 inces vs 3.9 inches Mule. Ranger has 30 HP vs 18 HP Mule. Ranger travels 41 MPH vs 25 MPH Mule. It seems to me the Ranger is more "off road" capable and the Mule is more for smooth "horse farms". I would take the ranger hands down over the Mule.

Have only looked quickly at the Kubota TRV 900, noticed it is built much heavier than Ranger or Mule, hydro trans is 3 range built directly in with the rear-end, diesel tractor engine. Have not riden in or drove one.

I work at a Kubota Dealership and was talking to one of the small engine mechanics and there were a few RTVs in for service. The universal yokes for the rear drive assy were being replaced and the machine only had about 200 hours on it. Everything has it's problems. Just thought I'd let you know. PAul

Local dealer here is selling the Kubota RTVs almost as fast as he can get them in. Gotta be something good about them.

I have owned a Snapper UTV for over two years, worked it hard, and am very satisfied. It's hard to beat for the money. As for the belt drive, if it's good enough for my Harley motorcycle, it's good enough for my UTV. No problems whatsoever to date.
