Don't get duped into buying a diesel mower if you are going to mow two acres once or twice a week. You will never make up the difference in price in your lifetime with it. I bought my 52 inch Toro with a kohler 23 hp gas motor for $6200 out the door. It I had bought a diesel it would have been about $10,000 bucks! $3800 dollars difference will buy a lot of gas and oil for a lot of years! Even most of the guys around here that do custom lawn mowing will always have gas powered outfits. You hardly every see a diesel. If I was mowing an entire school grounds and football field I might consider it with a school budget but never for a homeowner. It only takes me 1 hour to mow my 2 plus acre place and if I mowed once a week it would be 52 hours on the tractor if I mowed every week of the year which in Michigan I surely dont. We only mow about 7-8 months out of a year. So if my gas motor will last 3000 hrs I have about 60 years of mowing to look forward too with the old Toro. So if you buy a new motor in 60 years I guess you are doing ok. So don't waste any money on a diesel. There are so many good gas outfits out there it is a total waste. Plus a diesel stinks all the time you are using it like you have your face in a salamander while it it running. Go gas, 20-25 hp, toro, scagg, simplicity, dixie chopper, lexmark, bobcat, cub cadet, john deere, etc, and wear safety glasses and earplugs, (they are all loud). All these commercial models will last more than a lifetime and will be left to your kids like a family heirloom. Good luck and have fun!

My Kubota diesel was just a hair under $9,000, and Kubota gave me 0% interest for 24 month's. For the acreage I cut I think it pays to have a diesel. It is soooo fuel effecient, my diesel Kubota is quiter than a lot of these air cooled gas jobs, and contrary to popular belief, modern diesel engines don't stink like they did years ago. I can't smell anything from mine, my wife doesn't complain about the smell, and she runs it most of the time, and she has the most sensitve sense smell in the world. I guess somebody cutting 2 or 3 acres it would be hard to justify, but we cut acres a week. And my Kubota has a lot of extra features a lot of these cheaper(not by much) gas jobs don't have.

SIMPLICITY 27 HP GAS, Kohler Engine, 61" Deck. Sounds commom, but it has coil over shocks on the front bogey wheels and the back drive wheels also comes standard with a full width roller for striping and antiscalp. AWESOME MOWER less gouge.

For What It's Worth--Brady

I bought the Grasshopper 721 with the Kubota diesel and 61" deck. Looking back, i'm glad i bought the diesel, as it has more torque when you need it, it burns waaaaay less fuel than a gas motor and will easily outlast any of the gas motors.

With fuel prices the way they are, diesel IS the way to go, even though it does cost you more now.

My GH with the mowing deck out front rides very good and as i have back problems it allows me to mow longer. Also i can get under bushes ect.. with that front deck...

If you don't get a diesel, you will wish you had later....

Robert

I have a Kubota ZD21 with the Pro 60" deck. I have had it a year and a half and have cut A Lot of grass. I cut about 8 acres week. I second the comment about getting the Kubota machine with the Kubota engine. It's all designed together and it works good together, not a bunch of different brands of parts slapped together like a lot of these mowers I see. Yes they are expensive, but I'd be willing to bet my Kubota will still be going when a lot of these slapped together jobs are winded and done.

I have used the Kubota and the Exmark. Bought myself a Hustler Super Z XR7 60 inch deck. Love it.

Mowers from Ferris Industries are generally considered the machines to beat in our area (Central New York). I cut about 2 acres with my Ferris IS1500Z with a 25 hp Kawasaki in a hurry. The IS in the model number stands for "Independent Suspension", so the ride isn't bad either! If your son's trees are evergreens with low-hanging branches, he might prefer the Ferris Procut 20 which is a 3-wheeled mower with a big deck out in front of the two front wheels and the third (steering) wheel tucked in under the seat. It's great for reaching in under those branches. I don't yet know how to set up a link to their web site for you, but if you just do a search for Ferris Industries, Munnsville, New York it will come up. Tom

I have a Dixie Chopper with a Kohler engine. Get a commercial duty mower and he won't have to get another one. 2 acres is not that mich for a ZTR.

I'm going with Steven on this one. GRASSHOPPER! I've ran Grasshoppers for a couple of years now. I ran my own lawn service and also did grounds mainatinence for 5 large corporate properties. Ran several brands of machines. Ended up liking Grasshopper the best. Wonderful machines. The only other one I would consider is Exmark.

I would recomend a Toro. I mow 17 lawns by my self and have had several other mowers over the years. I am using a 16 hp with a 44 inch deck that can get between a lot of trees very easy. Of course it all depend on the dealer and his support. Make shure that it has greaseable spindles.

Grasshopper with the Kubota diesel. I ran one several hours for a friend (his was 3-cylinder Kubota gas engine) and it was AWESOME! Very well built and easy to work on.

Forget the Grasshopper with the kubota diesel and buy the KUBOTA with the kubota diesel. Cut with one once and you will never mow with anything else. Not cheap though.

I have a Country Clipper. It is made in Corydon Ia. Geneseo, Ill is the closest dealer for me. It is 25 hp kohler, 60" mid mount mower, 11 mph ground speed. I mow 1.7 acres with lots of trees. Takes me 1 1/2 hours. I love it, wouldn't have anything else!

I have a 718 grasshopper with the 18hp briggs gas. 61" deck. I mow about 8 acres, with LOTS of trees. An hour an acre is about right with a lot of trees. If I were looking for a new one, I'd prolly go for the diesel, but my gasser has over 3000 hrs with no trouble but a starter drive.
