It seems a young man stole his mother's car and took it for a joy ride and something went wrong with it. Someone said he blew up the motor,I'm not sure. He was on a fairly well traveled gravel road looking for someway to continue on. He finds a $200,000 Case IH field sprayer in someone's field and takes it! Sure, the keys were in it, but it is still theft. He took it about 25-30 miles to his destination, down a well traveled highway!! That wasn't bad enough, he then set the darned thing on fire and destroyed it. I don't know about anybody else out there, but I do believe that hanging from the nearest tree should still be legal in some cases. This is one of those cases!

Has it occurred to anyone that this person might be mentally disturbed?

I still say an elastrator strategically applied would be in order. It may not deter the next guy, but this persons offspring wouldn"t be involved in criminal activity.

I definitely agree that things are going down and theft is one of the many problems today.
Now I'm going to cite law here in the next couple of paragraphs, but I'm going to paraphrase it some.

1.
"When a man steals an ox or a sheep (also combines, sprayers, trucks, cars, money etc,) and shall slaughter it or sell it (or destroy it, burn it, ruin it, etc.) he shall pay five oxen for an ox and four sheep for a sheep (Bet you can figure it out) ..... ..... ..... . If the theft is found alive in his hand whether it is ox, sheep, or donkey, (our whatever else) he repays double"*

Now I'm still looking for where this next one is from, so it's paraphrased.

2.
but if the thief can't pay the owner, the thief is to work it off.

Now the next one regulates the owner who the thief is working for.

3.
"and when a man smites the eye of his male or female servant and destroyes it, he is to let him go for his eyes sake.
and if he knocks out the tooth of his male or female servant he is to let him go for the sake of his tooth." **
What do you that the world would be like if these laws were followed?
And someone near my farm owes me anywhere from 8 to 16 rolls of baling twine.

Several years back some kids broke into a local quarry over a weekend. I never heard exactly what equipment they were able to get started but I know they put at least one dozer over the pit wall. Fortunately none of them got killed but they did get caught and the parents were held responsible for the damages..... .Your right though, sometimes it seems even hanging wouldn't be enough punishment..... .I know we all got into mischief of one kind or another growing up but personally I never did anything to cause property damage like this to anyone. Just makes me wonder what kids nowdays are thinking when they do stuff like this????? ??

One thing everyone should remember, many insurance companies say you mast make a reasonable effort to protect your home, car, machinery from theft. They also claim leaving the keys in a machine, or vehicle or leaving home unlocked when away is not takeing reasonable precautions, and freqently won't cover theft under those circumstances.

A few years ago, some kids about 15 miles from here were poking around one night where there was some road construction. They started a bulldozer, took it for a little ride, then got off. The bulldozer continued forward and messed up a couple of new homes before someone got it stopped. If there's anything a kid WON'T do, it hasn't been discovered yet.

punishment or prison might put a permanent block on the youngsters mind so that later in life they would be haunted by it. something like being a hapless victim of circumstances making a desperate cry for help or some such silly noise. maybe a lifetime of hard manual labor in the servitude of the farmer that they stole from with no possibility of parole.

Around here its mostly cars but its a daily thing. Brand new off the lots or from a garage or parking lot all the same to them. 12 years up. Steal it for a ride out of town near home, set it on fire. Since few are caught and none are severly punished it goes on and on and on-- Bob
