I just purchased a 1944 farmall h ... everything on the tractor seam to work pretty well (few minor leaks) I have some oil coming out of the belly from the liftall, but my main concern after running it for a few hours that oil is leaking out of the spark plug recepticle on the port closes to the front ... gasket or more serious? thanks for your help

Kevin

It doesn't matter HOW much oil the engine uses, or doesn't use, the spark plug is supposed to be sealed to the cylinder head, so NOTHING leaks out there no matter WHAT'S going in inside the combustion chamber!

Most likely, the "oil" is condensed combustion products that have "sneaked" past that spark plug gasket a little at a time, and accumulated in the "pocket" in the head around the spark plug. Check to see that the sealing surface where the spark plug seals to the head is in good condition, and that ONE spark plug gasket, in good condition, is installed, and that the spark plug is properly tightened.

Let's apply a little logic to this problem. If the oil is ORIGINATING from the spark plug area, there are only two possible sources: 1) The oil rings on that piston are shot, and the spark plug is loose, allowing the oil entering the combustion chamber to blow past the spark plug gasket...a long shot, because if it was pumping THAT much oil into the combustion chamber, the smoke out the exhaust would looklike you're burning soft coal; or 2) The oil is coming through a crack in the head in the vicinity of the spark plug.

If the oil is originating somewhere else and just ACCUMULATING at the spark plug area, odds are you probably have a bad valve cover [rocker cover] gasket. The originals were cork, and were prone to get hard and brittle after years of usage. I'd look there first, if the engine isn't smoking like a freight train.
