Could someone explain blowby and what it is. I have a JD3010 and I do see a 'tube' coming off engine where there is a little air/smoke/whatever coming out. I wouldn't call it a lot but if I stare at it I can see a little. Should I be concerned. What is blowby and how much is too much....

(FYI I just cut/rake/bale hay and occassional bushhogging so I don't work the old girl too hard generally)....

Thanks

Blow-By is what red tractors do to green ones when working in the same field.

Round here those red ones don't leave the shop too often to prove your point. I'll try to see if I can find one actually doing some work and let you know....

How does the tractor start? If it is somewhat hard starting then you could have low compression caused by worn compression rings. Get a compression tester and test the compression. If the compression checks out OK and the tractor doesn't use much oil, then you don't have a problem.

No issues starting. Fires right up. Maybe takes2 or 3 seconds of cranking(I consider that good for a 45 year old tractor). Runs strong...

Joe,
Blowby is that miniscule amount of combustion chamber pressure that leaks past the piston rings. All engines have some, thus the vent tube or some other type of crankcase ventilation system. A small amount of visible vapor out the tube is normal, as long as you aren't having any abnormal smoke out the exhaust and aren't having to add oil more than normal between oil changes. From your description, it sounds to me like you have nothing to worry about. Good Luck and God Bless, Tommy

Not adding any oil(and I check regularly). Smoke seems normal.

Thanks
