They say our climate here in SW New York state is very similar to Englands. It rains almost every 3 days even in the late summer. I graze or chop everything for silage and make very little dry hay. My chopping equipment is getting old and I already have a silage baler so I'm thinking of going to making all silage bales, as I would be able to use smaller tractors and save a bit on fuel as well as other things.

Barnrat,

Why not see if you could rent yourself a wrapper and try it out before you jump over that railing. We wrapped for probably 10 years, and bagged silage bales for a few years before that. It was a definite step forward from square bales.... The plastic cost is what really got to eating me, and then the mess of having it around. Couldn't get rid of it. Dump won't take it.... Not supposed to bury it.... and at the time it couldn't be recycled in our area. Check out all the angles first. Round bale silage has it's good points. It's also got it's bad points... but I don't think you'll see a cost saving, especially when you could easily pick up a decent used harvester for 5 or 6 grand. You'll spend that on plastic in a year or two.
For what it's worth, I wrapped about 80 bales the other day. They were all on fields far flung from home, which needed to be cleaned off in a hurry. I'm not ready to go at silage just yet, so I baled them up and wrapped them. Now I'll probably end up selling that stuff, as I don't need it anyway. So, it's got good points too.

Rod

Looks good David. We have been trying to track down a Tarrup model similar to yours. Same idea as yours, but for round bales. Kverneland says no way until September, or maybe November. What wrappers are popular over your way? McHale is available here, but priced to high(about 15% higher).

Hey Allan; you must have seen films about England, its ALWAYS RAINING HERE. You wouldnt want our wet climate that produces 2 tons acre of hay, 4 tons acre winter wheat, 2 ton acre barley, 12 tons acre potatoes, 14 tons acre sugar beet !

On a serious note, I have read & seen on the site that some of the States is in deep trouble with drought, you all have my sympathy.

Weve had a cold and dry winter & spring, water levels particularly in the south east are very low. the past 3 weeks have been hot & sunny here and some nice silage & hay made. See post on baling hay here today. But the stubbles are not greening up - we do need rain now.

Always enjoy your posts & photos.
Cheers David in England

Oh yeah, we wrap 90% of the hay on our farm. Our setup is a little different than that, we wrap round bales instead of square and we have white or green plastic instead of black, but the idea is the same.

Be patient with my website, it is a little overworked, but you can see our wrapping operation there.

Here in Iowa a lot of bales are wrapped like you described.

I stack most of mine inside buildings.
