today I thought I would wash out my air cleaner for my 73' ford, and seen that there was oil in the air cleaner.. quite a bit to tell ya' the truth. prolly close to half a cup.. and when I took off the breather the is oil up in the valve cover.. it's real thick, looks about like grease. dunno how long it has been like that, I changed the oil about two months ago, but didn't see anything, becouse I have to crawl up into the hood to see it. is this bad? checked other trucks we have and no oil in the valve cover or air filter.. whats going on? any help would be great. it is a 360 with about 275,000 miles on it.. time for a new moter? it runs good.. THANKS! Tim Shultz

Like the others said, with that many miles on the 'ol gal, the rings are most likely worn out. The beauty of those old FE engines is that you could slip in a new set of rings, replace the rod and main bearings, grind the valves, and she's probably good for another 100,000. If you need a good used 360 engine, send me an e-mail.

nope, don't need a 360.. got one and a 300.. if I swap motors I will put in the 300 I think. they are a little better then the 360's I think.
I did clean out the the pcv and the filler cap, was full of crud.. and the small filter is not there.. have to take it from my parts truck I guess. see if that does the trick or not.. thanks for the help guys!

Do as the others said, but with that kind of mileage it's most likely blowby getting past the rings.

I agree w/ KEH, replace the PCV(Positive Crankcase Valve)on the right bank. Wash out the filler cap on the left bank and also wash the little filter that is inside the airfilter. If there is not one in there, put one there. It is sorta moon shaped and should be cleaned each time oil is change.

The oil fumes from the crankcase is drawn up thru the left bank, thru the PCV and into the carb base. You might also check the hose that goes from the PCV to the carb base. If the PCV is closed then the oil fumes will back up thru the left bank and into the air cleaner, then condense back into oil.

Sorry about the length,
Good Luck.....

Maybe pollution control valve (PCV) is stopped up, not letting crankcase breathe. That's just a guess, really don't know.
