I have an older King Kutter finish mower and I want to change the gearbox oil. On the back of the gearbox are two square head plugs, a smaller one nearer the bottom and a larger one nearer the top. If the small one is a drain, it doesn't seem low enough to drain all the oil. What is the procedure for draining and filling this gearbox? Thanks.

Top plug is fill. Bottom plug is 'level' check.. as in you fill to that level. If ya gotta drain it.. get a small tube and syphon from fill plug.. or hang mower on side and let it dribble.

Yep,

A $2 siphon gun.

Or, pull the plugs and flip 'er upsidedown. :>)

Some of those gearcases have "through bolts" holding a seal retainer to the bottom. When one of the bolts is rmoved (from underneath) the oil will drain out.

(Support the deck SAFELY you you don't get "squarshed" while reaching under there!)
