Before everyone gets their undies in a bunch, I an not saying this to pick on anyone in particular. I see several tractors advertised as being 'Rare'. We have, and have had, several old tractors over the years. I don't know the specs on every tractor made but I would like to know what makes YOUR tractor RARE? It bugs me when I see this with know follow-up. Is it serial no. 1? Is it 1 of 2 in a certian configuration? Is it a gimmic to get someone to buy YOUR tractor?

Second is 'One owner tractor'. Now I only went to two years of Ag college but if it came from the guy up the road and you own it now, doesn't that make it a 'two owner tractor'?

I don't mind if someone buys something to re-sell and make a dollar, we have done it on occasion too. As long as everybody in the chain is happy and no one got taken I am fine with that. It just bugs me when sellers are deceptive.

I'll save axles on JD's painted yellow for another day.

'Original Condition'. What in the world do people expect us to think they mean when we read that description referring to used, sometimes well-worn equipment? The original condition of anything that was factory-built is; new, zero hours, mint, never used. The condition then begins to deteriorate away from 'original' until it is 'scrap', 'repaired', maybe even 'restored'.

I'm sure we've all had experiences like these through the years to brighten our lives once in a while: I was looking for a utility tractor with a loader. Called about a Ford 3000, asked lots of questions, told the guy how far I'd be coming (150 miles one way) and that I'd have to find a trailer to rent. He answered each question well about how good everything was other than the tires; "maybe 60%". I had to drive 45 minutes out of the way to get a trailer (and return it, of course) in addition to the 300 mi. round trip. The tractor/loader was so ratty; banged up, parts hanging off/not working/toggled up, you get the idea. He said, "I hope I didn't misrepresent it." Another time, a guy assured me that his had "no rust, looks nice" and when I got there, I saw that he should have said, "no paint, looks like junk." When I questioned why he didn't tell me the truth on the phone he said, "If I told you what it was really like, you wouldn't have come to see it." I guess it made sense to him. Hmmm.

Yup been there done that. I inquired and bought some tractor wheels from an old guy who frequents this board the other day. This old guy said they had 'Almost New' tires on em too. Price was about right if that had been true. When I got em these tires are OLD, weatherchecked and dryrotted. One of them is cut/split in two places, the splits are 4 or 5 inches long. These tires are junk.

I wrote back to this old guy but his response is like 'Those tires are fine they have lots of life left in them'. Yeah right. Almost new huh?

Big rippoff if you ask me. Thats the last time I make a purchase like that.

Yep,
I see it on Ebay all the time:
"1948 8N Ford. Rare and collectable."
Huh??
They only made half a million of them. Half of which are still running.
Maybe he thinks it's rare because it's the only one he has.

I know what you are saying about rare. I own a 1938 Allis Chalmers A, 1225 made from 1936-1942. I swear to you that 5000 copies survived the scrap drives of WWII. LOL

Now if you want to talk rare. How about a Sheppard Diesel SD3 Orchard. I don"t remember the numbers, but a couple dozen were built and only 6 or 7 exist today. A really beautiful tractor.

Just one small pet peeve...

"Runs Good" is gramatically incorrect. "Good" is an adjective, and adjectives are used to modify people, places, or things -- not actions.

The correct descriptor is "Runs Well."

What gets me is "runs OUT well." Runout is a bad thing. Means something's bent.

The other one is "needs replaced." Did these people not make it past second grade, or what?

Whenever I see that, I think maybe they mean "runs out, well?" As in, "prematurely RUNS OUT of gas and other fluids due to leaks, bad rings, etc. WELL, what do you expect? It's old."

A lot of this "rare" talk is just an attempt at sales gibberish--and half the time, the tractors aren't really rare.

I tend to separate tractors into about three categories: ordinnry (the ones I love most), uncommon, and rare. What is an example of a rare tractor? Maybe a Waterloo Boy? I don't know. In my part of the country (lots of hills and young mountains), the "Wheatlands" or standards are uncommon but go out west and to western Canada and you have to kick them out of the way just to be able to walk.

A fellow in our club has a "Fate-Root-Heath/Plymouth" (pre-Silver King). I would have to say that is rare. Another fellow has a HI-Crop JD 420. Rare? I don't know; I'd place it in the uncommon category.

My $.02.

FOR SALE: Rare restorable vintage antique tractor.

Rare-- Hard to find parts.
Restorable-- Doesn't run, maybe 50% complete with stuck engine and cracked block. Tires are rotted off and rims are rusted through.
Vintage Antique-- Means the seller wants more than it's worth.

One owner . . . well there was a pig farmer down the road that would buy a tractor new and use it for 10-15 years, and when he was done with it, you wouldn"t want it. So I don"t know what the big deal about only having one owner is. Could be the most careless guy in the world maintenance-wise. Oh, and then there are the ads like this-- FOR SALE, 1949 JD tractor. Ran good when last used. $2500. Call up contact. What model JD (I dunno, was my dad"s). How do you know the year then? (I guessed that"s when he bought it . . .) When did it last run? (10 years ago . . . but mom said it ran fine when he parked it under the trees). Grrrrr.
