Good day all,
I need to build a set of tractor loading ramps for my truck. Each ramp need to be 450-500mm (+/-18 to 20inches) wide, 3.00m (+/- 9ft 10inches long) and need to take a load of 3metric tonne (6600lbs). Lightweight is essential (less than 100kg (220lbs) each), cost is no 2. Material need to be steel. Anybody got a good idea?
Many thanks.
Lourens

Hi Lourens,
I just built a set almost exactly as you describe. Mine are 16" wide, 9'4" long. I used 3" channel on each side (can't remember the pounds/ft, but it is the heaviest 3") and used 2" x 2" x 1/4" angle for the cross pieces on 10" centers with 3" channel for the bottom cross piece. I mounted the angle with the flanges resting on the lower flange of the channel (inverted "V") I've since used them to load a Bobcat S220 which is about the same weight range you mention. There was no noticeable flex in the ramps while loading. The ramps are heavy, but I can easily handle them alone. I'll try to get a pic & post when I get a chance. HTH,
Regards, DL

I would take something on the order of 6 in channel for the sides if you have 6600 lb load on 2 ramps. If that is the tractor weight and not the actual load, the it could be lighter such as 5 inch.

Morning Laurens; A few things come to mind. But to really study the problem We need to know how you intend to store them, from the length you wont be leaving them attached. Is it possible to store them just under the bed? A slide out arrangement? If so you could rig up a spring assist or something to help with the return to storage position. That is a lot of weight regardless of how strong you feel today. Taking the truck to a welding/fabricator shop may result in better answers than we can give just due to visual inspection. You may want to consider a drop down support located in the center to help with support and front end lift. My thoughts, Bob

I agree.. that's decent weight over a long span. I imagine a couple of mid length to ground supports ( a frame maybee ).. or right triangle construction )..

If you had said.. 3.5' - 4' .. wouldn't be as much issue with the weight.. I have some angle iron ramps made for that weight.. but they a 4' long.. and weight about 85# each..

I come up with 227 lb for just the I beams (S4 X 7.7). You can get the same load capacity for less weight using 2ea C6 X 8.2 channels (161 lb for the channels).
