OK, I had some corn smut issues last year on my sweet corn, still had a good crop. Well out checking corn today for ground moistness and noticed a few "balls" of fungus coming up from the root area of the corn. I dont like the sight of that. Do I have a bad problem coming in the next month or not? The corn is 14-17" tall and seems very healthy, nice and dark green, rain fall was little in may, but lot of organic matter in soil held moisture well. Is there anything I should do to combat the fungus? Any advice would be appreciated, all profit from the feild goes to the kids education account. They get to weed it this week so they learn money dont come with out working for it.

Hi Dave,
The smut fungus only grows on corn, anything growing on the soil is something else. You may or may not have a problem, but it won't be from a soil fruiting body. Incidentally, in Mexico corn smut is viewed as a delicacy. After I heard that, I collected some and sauteed it with onions and butter. Much more tasty than store bought mushrooms. You have to get it when it is still young and moist, before it dries out. It has changed the way I look at corn smut. It used to gross me out, now I try to find it. Perception is everything.

Dang.... does it have to be sweet corn of will the smut off feild corn work too? We get plenty on the feild corn, I'd think we'd have a few hundred $$ worth....

Kinda fun running it through the chopper though, everything coming out turns black for about 4-5 seconds then it clears up again...
