i live in southern michigan. i have a small plot of ultra sweet corn. my corn is looking good and getting close to knee high. i used a 10-10-10 fertilizer when i planted. when should i fertilize again?? & should i use the 10-10-10? or something eles? i read somewhere i should use nitrogen when the corn is about 12" tall. when i fertilize should i spread it through out?, and cultivate it in between the rows??. or should i just sidedress along the plants and then water??. i have about a pound of corn planted. do i need to spray anything on the plants?? thanks all

For a small plot and applying by hand I use 10-10-10 about a good handfull per 10 ft. of row at planting. Repeat about the time ears begin to form. Sidedress and water or cultivate. No spray, use the hoe for weeds. If no rain water well every 10 days or so. The soaker hose works good.

Miracle Grow in a handheld sprayer works well. Take the spray tip off the sprayer and just shoot a solid stream along the base of the plants while you walk down the rows. I just did my 1/4 acre that way and it took me maybe a half an hour.

10-10-10 will do the job for a plot that small. You could probably get a local seed & feed guy out to take soil samples and have them tested. Most people don't go to that much bother. Also, they might have a "corn mix" already packaged if there's demand for food plot fertilizer. PH level would be the first thing to get right to make fertilizer more effective. Just a ph test can be sent in through your local FSA office & wouldn't cost much.

Field corn needs about a lb of N for every bushel produced. So if you want 75 bu of sweet corn, you could expect to maybe pull 30-40 lbs from the ground (wild guess without a soil test); you added how many lbs of 10-10-10? And so you need to add whatever is short.

Corn doesn"t need as much P & K. So, you need to know what the soil has in it on it"s own, or add about 20-40 lbs of P & K to make up what the corn will use during the year.

You said you used 10-10-10 at planting, but you didn"t say _how much_ you used, would need to know that to help any - and how big your plot is.

Typically sidedressed in a band is the better way to go on acres of corn. For such a small plot likely won"t matter if you broadcast, as long as you don"t burn the corn with hot (N) fertilizer in the whorls.

I sidedress mine with ammonium nitrate, and spray for bugs about every couple of weeks.
