I have a 1956 case 300, and today I used it for about 2 hours. while using it I smelled a funny smell and when I shut it off I found out what it was. The battery was SMOKING HOT! thats what I was smelling. Smoke was coming out of both sides of the little vents on the battery. I was working on my tractor this morning before I ran it because I had to replace the alternator belt (12Volt). I did not mess with the alternator, but I could have bumped it around reinstalling it. My theory is that after I reinstalled the alternator, the voltage regulator on the battery quit or is not working now and it was overcharging the battery, thus making the battery hot? What yall think made my battery hot? Any advice please.

For those who think the $39.99 Napa one wire alternator is the cure for thier generator problems. This is another example of what can go wrong.

Could also be a bad battery that has shorted internally inside. I recently just last week had to replace a 12 volt that was in series to make 24 volts in the start supply battery bank in a 44 foot decommissioned coast guard boat.
That is the 3rd one I have seen in my life.
Its like connecting a wire with a small resistor between the neg and pos posts with a small resistor. The battery just sits there and boils.
The signs are that the battery will have a high amperage draw all the time, the battery will be gassing when charging, when the battery needs a boost it will draw excessive current from the charger.
It might not be a bad battery but it can be one of the things to watch for very carefully because it would be a safety issue.

I think its an old GM alternator. Its a one wire, external regulator type. I will try to get a picture. I had it rebuilt about a year ago, and the man told me all I had to do was hook one wire from the selinold to the one big post on alternator. I must have shorted out or bumped the external regulator. I think its the little metal piece on the side of the alternator. about a 2" by 2" piece. with a wire going to it. but how could I have tore it up by just putting on a new belt. I did have to shut the tractor off and tighten the little box (external regulator) because it was loose. could this have done it?

A picture sure would help...

There are some aftermarket regulators that can be attached externally to an older Delco alternator... that MAY be what you have.

It would help to know exactly what alternator was used in the conversion, likely a Delco 10SI.

Does it look like this 10SI? (For now, ignore the lead from the #1 terminal, and the diode spliced into the lead.)

Third Party Image

If the alternator looks like this, likely the internal regulator has shorted, or the "voltage sense" wire to the alternator's #2 terminal has becom disconnected (if it is a standard "3-wire" alternator).

You could check the voltage at the battery while it's charging. It should be in the 13.5 to not much over 14.5-Volt range.

The wire from the #2 terminal (if used) will be jumpered over to the large output stud, as shown in the picture, or MAY be connected to a point nearer to the battery, for more accurate voltage sensing.

If your alternator looks different, post a picture, so we can identify it!
