If it's been sitting for very long and points are corroded or have carbon stuff on them and pitted a dollar bill or paper isn't going to clean them enough to get the mag to fire any. If real corroded with gray coating or pitted you need to put in new points but to find out if it still has fire use a fine points file or fine some emory cloth to really get the crud cleaned off the points and then clean with alcohol or contact cleaner. You can also polish points on a fine dry emory stone too. For the FM-J mag set points gap at .020" and for FM-X mag .015" gap. If you need a parts breakdown on FM mags or parts email me. When getting points you need to know if the mag turns CW or CCW facing the drive end which will be reversed from other end. The J & X both use different points for CW or CCW and they don't cost that much to replace. Condenser should be the same and replace it too if getting new points. Good luck.

Try cleaning the breaker points by drawing a clean strip of white cardstock trough them several times when they are in the "closed" position.

Then, crank the engine over to a point where the breaker points are "open", and spray electrical contact cleaner between them to remove any debris and paper residue.

Allow them to air-dry in the open position before cranking the engine to check for spark or to try to start it.

Cleaning the points in this way does not leave them roughed up like using a point file, hopefully leading to a longer service life then points that have been "butchered" by a file.
