Neighbor has an old Ford Flail mower sitting out in a field. I asked him about it and he said go ahead and haul it over to your place and see what you can do with it. Walked over and took a look, it has a plate that says Ford but the model is blank. Has a serial number to long to remember and another number 22-124.. The belt is off the pulleys but the idler pulley looks fairly new. Gear box turns and feels good. Neighbor said he thinks he put new blades on it but it was banging against the housing once in a while so he quit using it. The housing needs quite a bit of work but a little plate steel and welding should take care of that pretty quick.

Going to be a couple days before I can get it over here but was wondering if anyone has any experience with these things and might give me a few hints on what to look for when I get into rebuilding it.

I have one that is 5 1/2 feet wide cut. These do a really good job and I won't go back to a brush hog after using one.

The one I have now was patched on the inside of the back with an angle iron. This was not good because it moved in closer and some of the knifes hit it. Was able to stop it hitting for now by getting rid of the worn spots in the hangers by building them up with weld. This let the knifes hang down farther.

My local Ford dealer keeps parts on hand for these as alot of road crews use them as they are alot safer when you hit something.

My Ford Flail is a Model number 917.. It is 6' 6" cutting width.. Yep, they can be repaired..the sheet metal at the rear of the drum rusts if not cleaned up after use.. There should be a full-length roller under the back.. If yours is like mine, you are gonna need some HorsePower to run it in tall heavy grass..!! Mine takes at least 40 HP or more for fairly heavy tall grasses.. Ford still has all the parts for these...and the flail knives are not very expensive either.. Ron..

Thanks Ron,

Will be pulling it with a Ford 3000 diesel, don't think HP will be a problem. Haven't measured it to see how wide it is, looks to be about 6 foot so 6 1/2 might be right on. Does yours have the model number on the plate?

It's in the weeds, when I get it out and on level ground I will post a picture.

Yes, the Model # is on the plate near and just below the Gearbox...
