OT Where does one buy.....

After a tour of home centers, old fashioned hardware stores, boat parts departments, etc I have not found a source for heavy duty hardware.
A little background, I have just torn down a really old speedboat trailer so that the only part remaining is the 2x2.5 inch tongue (about 10 foot long) and the 2x2 inch axle with wheels. The two pieces of square steel tubing fit together like a traditional cross with the short part of the cross being the axle. I need first of all a couple of heavy duty square U-bolts that I can use to strongly attach the axle to the center piece. I can only find very light duty U-bolts. Once I find the U-bolts I want to attach a couple of carpeted boards to the frame so that I can slide my 12' fishing boat onto the trailer and head off down the road. Is there a store that sells heavy duty bolts and would anyone have any ideas for attaching the boards? Brackets of some type, maybe? I have used this trailer in the past for hauling the boat but it sits too high and needed to be torn down to get the boat in and out of the water easier. It is a nice trailer and will save me a bundle if I can adapt it to this use. I know this is OT but this is where I hang out when on-line and you guys really have a lot of answers. This one is stumping me and every road is a dead end. Any ideas appreciated.

An alternative method would be to not use U bolts at all... but use two pieces of plate steel with holes in the correct places and just use plain old bolts, lock washers and nuts. It"s what you"re wanting...a cheaper way of making it do the job...and just as good. Paint them so they won"t rust and get her done. Fred OH

Spring shop or industrial supply. That's not Home Depot stuff you're looking for.

A store that specializes in boat trailer parts will have the U-bolts you need.

I would think that carriage bolts would work for attaching the boards; maybe counterbore the holes a bit so the bolts don't protrude. Fabricate some brackets on the frame to accept the carriage bolts.

Any good local welding/machine shop that does trailer repair should have those in stock or can custom make other sizes. Northern has trailer parts in their catalog also. northern.com ??
