Not a huge fan of pulling but it is interesting to watch for a while anyways. Quick question .... is there any advantage or disadvantage of a wide vs narrow front tractor for sled pulling competition? I can't imagine there being any real difference other than maybe more weight on the front of a wide front. Anything else ???

The later statement about rules is correct. With antiques, it makes it easier to get into classes because not all have wide fronts. Some are hard to find. Also, if I was not concerned about turning sharp, I would use a wide front because it would probably be easier to turn.
The narrow front is also lighter allowing for more moveable weight, since most places pull with weighted classes. So, make the tractor weigh as little as it can by itself so it can get into the lighter class and be able to add weight to move up.

Why do they add weight and then use itty bitty front tires and wheels?

One reason they use small front tires is to get the front as low as they can so it takes more to lift the front off the ground and by doing so it shafts the center of gravity of the tractor. By doing so it sort of adds more weight to the rear tires in a pull so they get more traction.

Wide front ends are better for pulling. The wide front end weights a lot more then the narrow front ends so the trikes pull the wheels off the ground faster then with a wide front

One advantage of the wide front is that you can get rid of all the heavy cast support needed for a narrow front.. the axle can be supported by the frame.. rather than the the cast steering components.. (custom built wide fronts)
Its all about movable weight.. being able to move the weight to where it is needed... Each track.. and each sled will pull different.. JDGnut

A narrow front does not weigh as much.

As far as antiques, I don't think it matters a whole lot. Now, when you get into bigger tractors such as the NTPA, narrow front ends are illegal for safety reasons. A narrow front will roll over much easier.
