got a question for you guys.. well really quite a few! my sisters boyfriend is finding out that baleing hay can pay off if you are carefull(and REALLY LUCKY) anyhow, he thinks "we" need another tractor.. it would be used for pulling the baler, haybine and bush-hog.... I though a 185 AC would fit the bill pretty good, plus I am a bit in love with those tracors.. but since he is an IH man he wants like 806 or something.. well dennis polk has a 966 with only like 2,000 hours on it.. fresh paint.. cream puff you might say.. dunno what he wants for it yet.. going monday to look it over.. but would you say this is a good tractor? any thing we should look at real close? could this thing pull a haybine? (in case we should have a rich uncle die or somthing)
THANKS! Tim Shultz

Well maby the allis is the underdog hear but I would go with it. Maby since im just more familiar with the allis 200 i would pick it. I pull a Vermeer 605 F round baler with it and it does fine. I also mow with a disc mower and haul bales as well. If it has been taken care of its a pretty good tractor. Not to bad on fuel either. I dont know about the 185 but on the 200 you dont have to straddle anything. Id take the allis.

there is no comparison between the 185 and a 966 for PTO work,The 185 has NO LIVE PTO and a poor on the go shift, plus sitting down in the middle straddling a transmission case. The only good thing is it will be half the price the 966.Now before being jumped on,Allis Chalmers NEVER HAD A TRUE LIVE PTO until the 7000 seris came out.So your answer is Money and what you can live with in convenience and comfort.

Joke for a live PTO had to stop the tractor to put it in gear then use the high/low lever to stop the tractor without stopping the PTO

To their credit the 185s and 200s had a Hyd.operated engagement so you didn't have to stop to put it in gear but anything that had a flywheel, the 0 to speed was instant so the pto shaft was in danger of something breaking.

Tim: Given my experience with haybines, balers, Farmalls, etc., 966 would probably run 3 - 9' haybines or 3 square balers, if you can gear up a tandem hitch. Round baler would be a bit different, however you didn't indicate which.

I farmed for years with Farmalls 300, 560, 656 and 1066. To this date that old 300 still holds the daily square baling record on my farm. Now I will admit this was more about available labour than horsepower. It's one thing to bale this hay, but something has to be done with it after baling.

I have a 966 and use it on the haybine and vermeer 605H baler. I pull 5 18s with it too. I find she is easy on fuel too.
Good on the road too.

Probably never in the history of man will a more user friendly good ole basic tractor ever be built than a 966 or 826 etc. Lots of power; handles like a dream; shifts with ease; excellent seat; the best 3-pt. If you find a 966 with honest low hours, grab it.

966 will take a load of bales down the highway faster than the Allis too. Used em both. My brother and I would race to get to the 966 first. The Allis just drives slow..... ..... ..... ... Other than that I likes the Allis She was a 190XT
