My tractor ran hot today twice and I had to shut it down. what could be causing this other than it is 100 degres here? I did put about a half a can of octane booster in the gas to try and clean the fuel system. So I thought it may have been because of the octane that made it run hot. So I drained the gas and put new gas in the tank with no octane booster and it still ran hot. It ran fine a few days ago, and the antifreeze coolant level is full. Dont think that the thermostat is stuck neither. Any advise?

Guys, it was the fan/water pump belt. It was a little loose. enough that at full RPM it was not turning the fan/water pump enough. Got a new one on now and it runs about 185 degress. thanks for the help.

guys, your right I bet it is the timing. i messed with it the other day because my tractor was skipping and did not set it back with a gun like I did the first time I rebuilt it. I will try this and let yall know if this is the problem. I bet it is.

As previously stated. Retarded timing causes over heating as does detonaiton/knocking that you can not hear. At that age of tractor even a new fan belt may not help much. Once the pulley grooves become worn a bit they will not grip the belt properly. As glazed slippery belt sometime sisn't obvious to the eye either. The flushing of the lime/scale etc from the inside is a good idea. Without a doubt somebody has used tap water in the cooling system and laid down a layer of heat insulating crusty stuff in the rad. Demineralized or distilled water or wish you had.

I agree with Don c
If it were me I would set the timing with a good gun. I stress a good gun as they can be out.
It does not take much to be out and it can cause heat problems even if the tractor runs good.
I never trust my ear any more after I bought a good gun and found how far out my ear can be.
Now that's my ear. Maybe your ears are better than mine are. Just my suggestion.

Did it run hot before you changed the timming, if not set it back a tad and try it, timming is a touchy thing on engines running warmer or even hot..

You night want to check to see if some of the tubes are plugged. With a flash light you can look into the filler cap and might be able to see some of the tubes. This is what happens to one of my tracors. It is from rust flaking off from inside of the engine due to years of water only. Stan

The tractor is a 1956 case 310. I did turn the distributor because I was trying to find out a few days ago what was making it run rough and I set the timing by sound (I found its the best way to set it on this tractor.)could that be it. It is running Smooth now but is still running hot. I think I will take the thermostat out and see if that will help. What yall think the problem may be?

What make/model? Some seem to be more prone to thermostat problems than others.

Generically speaking, I've found it to be the case that if you're working a tractor hard on a hot (80+) day, it will run hot to some degree. When running a grain vac, I prefer to tie a garden hose to the radiator, and let cold water run across the radiator fins while I'm running it. Makes the coolant temperature fall by almost a third (one full mark on the temperature gauge, IH 1086.)

As for mechanical problems... Have you flushed it lately? Or completely drained it and put in fresh antifreeze? It does get old after awhile, you know. Over in the Oliver forum awhile back, somebody mentioned some way of de-lime-ing the coolant system. Something like drain it, fill it with vegetable oil, run it until it gets hot, and let it sit overnight or a couple days, the longer the better. I'm thinking "old" or the "nebraska cowman" might know the proper method.

How do you know it's not the thermostat? I like to test those with a pan of water on the stove, with a candy thermometer in the pan. Remove the thermostat, put it in the pan, and heat it to see when/if it opens.

But honestly, I'm waxing poetic. If it's 100 degrees and your working a tractor, I don't think you have a problem. Blame the weather.

Erm, Vinegar, sorry.

Rumour has it that on 4-27-2006, old speaketh thusly:

"Drain it out of all anti freeze. Then FILL with 100% vinagar. Then run it till good and warm/hot. Go in the house and have a beer or cup of coffee or what ever. Let it sit for say 2-3 hours. Drain it back out and if you can hook up a hose to the block drain and back flush the system with a garden hose. Remove the radiator cap and go have 2 or 3 beers or 2-3 hours which ever comes last. Tomorrow I get to find out if the last engine/machine I did that to has cleaned out enough to stop the over heating. Plus it now has a thermostat in it so maybe, maybe I got this on licked "

Wash the radiator with a garden hose making sure to clean all of the junk out of the fins. Then get some Liquid Plumber type drain cleaner from the Dollar store. Drain the radiator and block and refill with a couple of bottles of drain cleaner and water. Run it for a while then drain and flush with water before refilling with water/antifreeze mix. Don"t remember wher I heard this tip but it is a poor mans version of the sodium hydroxide ( lye ) that radiator shops use.

Did this on my 2N and it took care of the overheating problems.

Just my .02 worth.
