I have been working on the hydraulics on my JD 2640 and I can't seem to fix it. I have overhauled all of the pto clutches, seals, drums and piston and it still quits working after a few minutes. I plugged off all the remotes to see if that was where the problem was and that didn't help. Started using it today without the pto, just the 3 pt hitch and in a few minutes the hydraulics quit, steering etc. Let it set a few minutes and it will work for a few minutes and quit again, what could be the problem? The clutch doesn't slip but it is hard to get in gear but I don't think that the pressure plate is worn and slipping, not letting the transmission pump turn because the tractor pulls good and the pto doesn't seem to slip. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I hate to state the simple things, but it sounds like you have a viscous problem. My god-father had a problem with his tractor and he spent major money to find out nothing at a dealership. It took me 15 minutes to find out that he was using generic fluid from the "farm store" in town. This stuff was junk. Green and red tractors have their own fluids for a reason. If you are using "cheap fluid", change it and the filter and try again. I have seen this many times because I work at a "green dealership".

The tractor doesn't have the high low or reverser and when I had the pto apart I checked all the lines for leaks, the filters are in good shape I can't see any spraying in the rockshaft,I took the transmission pump apart and it seemed good I may try plugging off the steering next and see if that is where the problem is,Thanks for all the help and if anyone thinks of anything that it could be please let me know. Thanks

Put a test gauge on it and see if your charge pump pressure drops off when everything quits working.

If the pressure drops off then check the hyd. filter and sump screen for metal flakes that may of came from failed brakes.

Willy, you probably have a high pressure leak to sump. Since youv"e eliminated the SCV"s check steering valve for excess heat and look in hyd. oil fill hole for oil spraying from rockshaft valves. When you repaired pto clutch did you inspect pto supply lines for cracks? Does yor tractor have hyd. hi-lo option? Tx Jim

it sound to me like you have something blocking the suction tube going to the transmission pump.if it quits then restats. after it sets. i have also seen a crack in some of the internal lines and also a busted pump gear in transmission pump.a bad engine clutch wouldn.t have any efect as the transmission pump is drect drive off the fly wheel. have you cleaned the screen bottom of transmission.
