Got a question for ya...

Just looking for some ideas from the outside. I sold some NOS parts on ebay about 3 - 4 weeks ago. I received the mans check promptly and mailed the parts out USPS on May 20th. It has been two and 1/2 weeks and the guy says he has still not received them. I have no reason not to believe him, but have no tracking # to check. My question is what would be fair to us both? I no longer have the parts and hate to give him his money back, but if he doesn"t have them it is certainly not fair to him to pay for something he didn"t get. Nobody is angry in the least at this point, and I sure don"t want to get to that point. I did have a good clear address and return address, so I don"t know what would have happened. I normally send UPS, but the fellow mentioned he could sure use the parts for a tractor he was working on so I sent them via USPS on Saturday thinking it might speed the box up a day or so. Just wondering what you guys think. Thanks-Bob

Go to your Post Office and have them track it. It should be in their computer because of the postagre you bought. They will be able to tell you what happened. Had the same thing happen to me last year. I didn't get "Delivery Confirmation" and the guy called to say he never got it. Had the USPS track it and they had it as being delivered to him.

Tomorrow morning call the post office of the delivery address. Ask to speak with the mail carrier for that address. The carrier may remember delivering it or can watch for it and note when it is delivered. Most postmasters and route carriers are very cooperative and successfully deal with these issues daily.

One possibility is that the guy really did get the parts and is trying to get an undeserved refund. But there is apparently no way to know for sure. Once any carrier takes possession of a package, they are literally storing it until it is delivered. Best case is that it is "stored" on a vehicle moving toward the destination. I think this is one of the reason that UPS delivers so quickly, it costs something to store stuff in a warehouse. But I do have to give the postal service real compliments for the good service they give me.

I sell quite a few items on eBay. I always ship using USPS priority mail, and I always get the delivery confirmation for an extra 50 cents. With delivery confirmation, the package is scanned when the post man delivers it, and then there is documented proof that the package was delivered and the buyer can never say that they did not receive it. I nearly always ship my items the following business day, and nearly always the item arrives in the buyers mail box in 2 to 3 days.

Yes, I keep telling myself I should do that. In fact i should do the whole thing online, and then I could just put the item into my mailbox and have the carrier pick it up. It would save me the trip into town.

Well, you have shared a lot of good advise. I will talk to buyer and try to hold on for a few more days to see what happens. Thanks again for the advise. Bob

I've bought stuff on eBay and seen it take almost 6 weeks to arrive. Anything under 30 days, I'm pleasantly surprised. For that reason, if at all possible i have it shipped UPS. That'll be here inside 4 business days.

I think about the best you can do, at this point, is scan and email any ticket you got from the shipper to prove you did, indeed, send it.

I also received a credit card bill once, all chewed up and in a plastic bag. The writing on the bag said something to the effect of "this rarely happens, but in your case it did." So chewed up it was open, and I couldn't even find the balance due. So of course I first got the fraud alert stuff going on, and then I contacted the credit company (citibank) to get a new statement issued. Then it was a bit of a rush to get it paid on time.

But above all else, keep in contact with the customer--at least every few days. This will usually save you from the negative feedback, as long as you still look interested.

Only issue I've ever had with UPS, btw, was that once a sender took it to the pickup location, and the people there neglected to put the right ZIP code and city on the label (they didn't match.) I was tracking it, and I watched it bounce back and forth from New York to New Jersey about 3 times before it was caught and sent westward. Only problem I've ever had with UPS.

Best way to ship parts with USPS is Priority Mail, insured for over $51.00, that way you get a tracking Number and they have to be signed for by the receiver. USPS does an excellent job up in the New England area. Ocassionally they misroute a Package but almost never lose one. Just check the prices at Fedex and Ups. You"ll quickly become a believer. Have a Goodun.

I bought some small peices off Ebay about 3 months ago, and then bought another pair from the same guy on a different auction. 1st pair got to me in about 1 wek, the second pair didn't show after 3, he sent new ones and the about 1 1/2 months later the original ones finally showed up. They were shipped USPS.

I'd bet it's a local issue. Here in Mass I think USPS does a great job. Send something to my in-laws in north east Florida, and a first class letter or small package (like a DVD) takes a week to 10 days.

You should be able to go to the place it shipped out from and get the tracking number. You know the day it was and the address it was going to that should be enough.

 USPS=huge mistake. in reply to Bobl1958, 06-07-2006 11:36:48
Those folks in the post offices lately have been getting worse and worse reviews as far as loosing mail and packages. They're slower than all heck in some areas. I dont know what you can do now but wait it out and see if they turn up i a week or two. And even then they'll probably show up in a plastic bag all crushed and useless with a note saying "sorry".

I"ll never ship anything to someone or have anything sent to me by USPS unless it"s insured. They"re getting worse and charging more.

Bout gotta insure anything through the post office. They could lose the Titanic if somebody mailed it. I swear they are bad down here in the hills, and everybody blames it on the other guy. The Post master, the carrier, on up the line, whoever. We used to have our canceled checks mailed to us from the bank, till we lost a months worth and they never did show up. They're just out there in never never land somewhere. I always use UPS. They have a tracking number and can tell you exactly where your package is. Harley

We have the exact opposite problem with ALL of the package services. None will deliver to a farm address up here. They are not allowed to, even if they know the location. My place is right on a major highway, has a sign clearly identifying it, I know the drivers personally, but all of their company policies do not allow them to stop. Know where they deliver it to? The POST OFFICE!!!!! !!!!! This after a 3-4 week wait, and exorbitant charges. There is no freakin' way in the world i will ever deal with any of them!
