I put 57's down and the the floor stays covered with hay.Atleast concrete could be swept up.And in real damp cool weather the stuff stinks. Is there anything to put down on this stuff to keep from getting moldy?Thinking about salt. The floor stays dry but the moisture leaches up enough to keep it stinky.I hate to put $crete$ down but..any suggestions.Whats a 10 year old floor like in a hay barn with gravel?

I bought a roll of 6 mil vapour barrier poly 100'x 20'. Laid it down with lapped edges and put the hay on top. No moisture got through so no spoilage.

OK,I use 5mil poly and pallets to store my hay on. in reply to plumboy, 06-07-2006 08:51:21
I was talking about all the trash that drops on the floor from just handling the bales in the barn.lol...Theres enough moisture in the ground that I dont think pallets alone do good.10 years of all that organic trash falling in there I will have a dirt floor.

I agree with the others. I have a concrete floor in my feed room. My hay is stacked on palates. -NEVER- had a problem with hay spoilage.

I put all my hay on pallets in my hay shed. Te floor of the shed is just gravel and the pallets keeps the hay dry and off the floor

You don't store hay on anything but a wood barn floor in Ohio unless you want it to rot.

I'd at least get some pallets and put down first so the air can circulate.

I have three barns where I store hay. I have spread #3 stone (railroad ballast type) in two of them to a depth of 4" and have had no moisture or other storage issues (small square bales). The other one has a wood floor (hemlock) over a 3-foot crawlspace. The hay stays dry, so does the floor.

I would use concrete because it absorbs and retains moisture.

Correction:

I would NOT use concrete because it absorbs and retains moisture. Of course, that's what I meant to say. Sorry.
