Is there a "best" of all the Ford Powerstroke diesels? Looking for a new (used) truck, have decided on the Ford unless I can find a real deal on a Dodge.

I recently just bought my first diesel truck. It is a F350 crew cab dually XL, with a 7.3liter powerstroke turbo automatic (white in color). It had 212,300+miles on it when I got it. It now has 215,200+ miles on it and it runs and sounds great. I know several people who have ford diesels and none of them have ever bad mouthed any of the powerstrokes even the newer ones. But I can say that when I am casually talking about trucks with a guy driving a $40k-$45K truck (Ford, Chevy, or Dodge) and I tell him I have less than $6k in my truck, and he can see mine runs, sounds, and pulls just as good as their truck they are impressed. The only work I have done too the truck is six new tires, front end alignment, new glow plugs and glow plug relay (really helps with cold starting). I am getting about 16/17mpg depending on conditions.
I don't know how to compare it to others but I am very satisfied with my truck so far and you can really feel the power of a powerstroke. I would recommend you look for a good used truck from 94' on up, if its a 94' just be sure its a powerstroke and not the older IDI.

If I had to go Powerjoke, I'd go with one of the later 7.3, say 2001, or 2002. The 6.0 litre powerjokes had problems the first couple of years, even now they still have some problems, but better than before. But the best of all would be to get the Ford, yank out the powerjoke, toss it into the dumpster, shove a Cummins into that Ford (just like Ford does themselves on the F650 series), then you'd have youself a real rig.

I hear that the best powerstroke aint a Ford at all. Its the one where the Ex calls you the morning after to brag that the new guy caused her to keep the neighbors awake all night long, and she's gonna fix him breakfast in bed for it. I don't answer the phone that early anymore. Just joking...I had the phone disconnected.

Actually, I'm a cummins guy. '96 daily driver with over 250K and still going, and going, and going. Something the Ex never had to worry about with me, so she wrote...with paint on the road in front of the house. Just joking...my new girlfriend wrote it for her.

Stay away from the 6.0 I had a 2003 that was nothing but trouble from the second week after I took delivery of it. When I got rid of it the week before the warrenty was up the dealer said that they needed to reseal the bedplate (the bottom half of the motor). The 6.4 that they are comming out with to replace the 6.0 from what I hear from dearborn is not any better. Find yourself a 7.3 that was the last one worth anything. Just my $.02

Watch out for injectors on the powerstroke, millage/year doesn't seem to matter. Be sure to stay away from the new 6.0L, the 7.3L was better. Friend of mine is a diesel mechanic for a huge Ford dealer, and he and I both drive '01 Dodge/Cummins. The Cummins is a great motor, just look at how many tractors used the 5.9L

Well, I can tell you they must have made at least one. I bought my Cummins dodge new in 1991 and to this day, I have not needed any repairs to the engine or the entire drive train for that matter. Now making their paint stick to sheet metal is a story all by itself.
