I am trying to get the front rotors off of my neighbors 91 pickup. He got the brakes real hot and I can't get the free wheeling hub off. I am not sure how it comes off. There seems to be some tapered washers on the studs that might have to come off but I haven't been able to get them off. Thanks in advance.

Well thanks all for the help. The washers were seized on so bad I had to use an air chisel to get them out. The left rotor was seized so bad to the hub that it cracked when I tried to seperate them. Oh well TomR, you need to move to my area and I can work on your truck. Parts and labor for this one including blower resistor will be under 500 dollars. I don't think I would be going back to where you had your brakes put on. There are plenty of places out there that want your business.

Just tap the hub around the tapered lock washers. They pop right out, more or less. A little never sieze on them helps when putting back together.

This won't help - Just a rant. in reply to jon holt, 06-04-2006 08:25:23
This won't help - Just a rant.
I have a 89 Toyota 4wd, two years ago I had the front brakes done and they charged me an extra $210.00+15% to take the hubs off, they estimated it was a 3 hour job to re & re the hubs and 6 to 7 for the whole job.
They did the brakes and installed the exhaust manifold pipe; I was out of there in just less than 4 hours.
When I got home, the wife had a fit $900.!??, she called the manager and she got $105.00 rebate.
Well guess what?
I now have to wait the whole estimated time. I've seen my truck sitting on the hoist or in the service bay with nobody near it for an hour or more at times. They tried to justify the wait by saying they were waiting for parts.

Yes the cones have to come off. Take a small chisel and place in the split of the cone and hit with hammer. Can be hard to get off.
