I have an engine apart here that appears to be bored out 0.010 oversize. The pistons appear to be stock, at least there is no indication that the piston is oversized, no stamps, etc. Is it possible that in the past, somebody bored out the engine to 0.010 oversize and used oversized rings but still used the stock sized pistons? In other words, would a guy still use the stock pistons with a 0.010 overbore and oversized rings?

Pistons sometimes were 'knurled' in the skirt area to make them larger and avoid piston slap.

They probably put in .010 oversized rings in and did not bore it. They were probably trying to make up some of the end gap from having a worn out bore. Just my guess.

Heck, ya, if you want terrific "piston slap".

Piston clearances (for average-sized bores) run .0015" to .0045", and adding .010" to those clearances definitely will make things a bit loose!

A couple of years ago, I traded a guy some transmission work for a Deere 120 garden tractor with a 12HP Kohler that had been "overhauled", and that's how it was set up... .010" rings and a STD piston!
