Can you smooth out a rutted field using discs only? I was going to brush hog the field, then get a disc set to drag around to get rid of previous ruts.

Allan is used to light, dry soil.

Your question is simple, but it really depends on where you are starting out, & where you want to get to.

In heavy wet clay soil, the disk is going to pack more than level & you end up with a cement-like lot.

In heavy dry clay soil, the disk won"t do mouch at all.

If you have soft crop land, the disk will do what you want.

If you have old firm packed hay ground, might not do anything at all.

Some disks, like the new little 3pt units, are just toys and don"t work in tough ground. Some disks are primary tillage tools, big heavy offset deals, and will do anything a plow can do.

So, kinda depends on what you have, & where you want to go. I"d give it a 67% chance of working, but all depends.

Paul, here"s the story... I"m in the process of buying a piece of ground (42 acres), and the front 10 acres or so is rutted up pretty good. Owner says a few years back, it was farmed. Last crop they went in while it was wet, and left the ruts. Around these parts, I"m guessing 18 inches or more of topsoil before any clay. I was just thinking of picking up a set of discs, and trying to level it out. For tractors I have a ford 641, a Farmall A, Allis B, and a Massey Pony. I figure the Ford is the only one that would be useful for this.

get a 2-14 3 pt mounted plow, then use a wood drag, then disk three times at a different angle each time , harrow it and plant it. if it is rutted bad enough repeat next year again
