I just purchased a 1949 8N and i have some questions the lever for the 3 point has to be in which position it is under the seat on the right side if you are sitting on the tractor. should it be front or back to raise the 3 point? and the lever on the left of the trans in front of the rear is for what? i am looking for a manual and would like to use the tractor until it gets here. which manual do you feel has the best information? how hard is it to pack the hyd- cylinders on the bucket? Thanks in advance.

Definitely get an owner's manual. Reprints are available at most tractor supply stores and on the internet for about $12. The reprinted manual is the 1950 version and covers the side mount distributor model. Your 1949 is a front mount distributor so you might want to look for an earlier edition. They come up on ebay fairly often. Price is usually in the $15 - $25 range depending on condition.

In addition to an owner's manual, most people seem to like the I&T Shop Manual, publication # FO-4. Those again are available at lots of places (even this website).

The editions of the owners manual that I know of are:
Form 3729-47-G July 1947
Form 3729-48-A January 1948
Form 3729-48-H August 1948
Form 3729-49-C March 1949
Form 3729-49-H August 1949 and December 1949
Form 3729-50-F June 1950
Form 3729-50-M December 1950 (also in reprint)
Form 3729-51-K 1951
Form 3729-52-C 1952

"I just purchased a 1949 8N and i have some questions the lever for the 3 point has to be in which position it is under the seat on the right side if you are sitting on the tractor. should it be front or back to raise the 3 point?"

On an "8N", there are 2 levers on the RH side... the little "flush handle" under the seat is the draft/position control lever, and will be "up" (position control) for 'most all uses ecept plowing (down, for DRAFT CONTROL).

The "touch contol lever" is moved forwards/down to lower the hitch, and rearwards/up to raise the hitch.

"and the lever on the left of the trans in front of the rear is for what?"

That lever is the PTO engagement lever. Forwards = PTO "OFF", rearwards = PTO "ON". The PTO must be "ON" for the 3-point hitch left hydraulics to function.
