Caterpiller Fifteen?

Hi folks - complete newbie here, but I've had some experience with mechanical stuff, here and there.

Have a deuce and a half, a couple of Dodge WC's, and I just bought a Caterpiller fifteen and a small disc harrow, whole setup for $250. Tractor hasn't run in 25 or so years, but most of it's there - it's missing the carb, spark control, and what looks to be a couple of other bits and pieces. I'm hoping it at least rolls so I can get it to my property.

Does anyone have any tips that I should be looking for with this machine? Never having had one, I'd appreciate any and all advice from those more experienced.

Thanks!
Greg in Vista, CA

I'd like to get me a deuce someday, that's my one toy I really want. Is yours turbo charged? That's one of my favorite things about a deuce, you can always tell what it is a mile away. I just saw one of the new rebuild's this weekend at Camp Atterbury. It has the engine and drive train from a FMT and super singles.

Thanks for the links and tips guys - I appreciate it. Always helps to find a board like this when you jump into a new project. Luckily, I'm also only a couple of miles from the Vista Steam Museum, and I'm sure I'm going to be looking through their archives.

John - yep, mine's running the small ring turbo - the engine is the LDT 465-1D. Those really noisy ones are called "whistlers" by us historic military vehicle nuts. Usually found on the LDT 465-1C engines, but you can always put them on the later mills too. That 1D is plenty loud enough for me though :)

Yep, that "new" rebuild (they actually completed that program back around '91, from what I recall) is the M35A3. Most of the deuces that you'll see, at least the later ones, are the M35A2 version, which is what I have. I'm currently getting enough tires to run those singles as a ten wheel model. Should be fun once all the sandblasting is done.

Greg, We got 2 of the 5 tons for fire trucks. One long frame 5 ton has the Continental LDS-465-A and other tractor/trailer 5 ton has 250 Cummins. Neither one is a speed demon but they get the job done on rough CRP grass and pastures. We get parts from Memphis or Antelope or surplus when we can.

Yah, some of those 5 tonners are good trucks. Basically the same engine (LDT/LDS) as a deuce, but puts out a bit more power. I"d rather have that Cummins though.

Parts are still all over the place, which is good.

Carburetors for some of those CATs are hard to find, good luck. There is a forum on here for crawlers and here's a link for the Antique Caterpillar Machinery Owners Club.
