A 4wd truck locked in and dry pavement are not a good combo. Ya see the front axle is actually geared a hair faster than the rear so as to pull you through mud and snow. So if it is supposed to spin faster and can't do so on the pavement you know what will eventually give out? Anything from the hubs to the transfer case.

speed makes zero difference..... .....it's whether you are on a slippery enough surface to allow the wheels to slip when you turn..... .....dry pavement and you can buck like a bronco and do some damage at even 10mph..... ..... ..a foot of soft mud or snow and you can do top speed and not hurt anything at all. I've had some over 100mph when ice racing..... ....

I agree with Stickler, if you have it locked in 4X4 driving it on dry road surfaces will cost you the transfer case in a very short time. If you're on a wet gravel/mud or slick pavement you're pretty much limited by the road conditions (high side). Low side should only top out around 35-40 mph - those 360s don't like high RPMs.

Theres something wrong with the dodge.

With my 95 1500 dodge There were times I would forget to take it out of 4 wheel and go 65 and not even know it.

My thinking and practice, you engage and lock in to use for a specific need, then disengage and lock out. Guess it depends upon your gearing and whether you're in 4H or 4L... but driving down the road in either because you can aint one of the needs.

Others have answered your question before I had the chance, but I"d like to say nice rig. Those old 70s Ford & Chevys have got to be the best looking truck ever made. I had a friend in high school that used a 72 F250 with 400v8, camper special, 2wd, perfect body for a farm truck. got about 6mpg, but pulled anything you hooked it to. got rid of it becuz he threw a main bearing. I could have bought it for $400 before it blew, wish I would have.

Hi Tim,

As stated it's all in the gears. I had a 76 Dodge power wagon, 400ci, 4spd, 4:10 full-time 4wd, and would run all day at 60mph with 14kGCW. It lasted 225k miles with very little repairs.

Jack up the rear wheel, mark the drive shaft and tire, rotate the tire and count driveshaft revolutions to find axle ratio.

I can,t tell from the picture for sure but it looks like you have warn hubs on that,(meaning you have to turn them in by hand then go inside the cab and shift it into 4x4) if that,s the case then just shift it outa 4x4 in the cab back to 2 high and leave your hubs in and it won,t hurt anything , might cost you a bit more in gas but it is good to run them with the hubs in some to get everything nice and oiled.I f it is fulltime 4x4 meanting hubs can,t be turned by hand and you only have to shift in into 4x4 range inside the cab , then i wouldn,t run it very fast, even when they were new they didn,t stand up to that too very long, now that,s it,s 33 years old it might be getting a might bit tired and decide to pop the transfer case or the front axle gears or both.

I'm gonna agree with DaveTX. It's probably not geared for much speed. My personal guess is that something might come apart anytime after 40-45 mph! The first complaint you hear out of it might be a BANG, not a scream..... .

Tim - Depends a lot on how you have it geared. That thing is probably set up for massive torque so top end is going to be limited.

Hey Tim, I don't know how yours is geared, but you most likely have the lock-outs in the front hubs, so in 4 LO keep it under 30 mph. In 4 HI I wouldn't go much over 50 mph. If the roads are slipply or snowy enough for 4 HI you probably shouldn't be going that fast anyway.
