So, hypothetical question. Say you have an old Ford that is straight, but rough around the edges. And you have this neighbor that has a sharp original 4320, and his dad's restored 3020. he's getting into the tractor drives big (taking the 4320 on the WMT drive for the Iowa locals) and he keeps ragging on you to take the Ford w/ him on a couple of local drives. Would you go? I know that there's a local drive around our county that has some machines in their work clothes, but mine's got some rust on the hood, and just looks kinda tough. it would be fun i'm sure, but just don't know, don't want to be the joke of the bunch. I don't completely agree w/ the whole plan--put a bunch of hours on a tractor just to drive around, but it seems like a nice way to meet a few people.

I would go for it. Like others say, there would be some who would look down their noses at you, but the majority would love seeing an original tractor. A litle rust and faded paint shows the life of the tractor. It's earned its keep, and still is. I don't know of many tractors with flashy paint jobs that are still working hard. Leaving it original retains an extra element of character, and I think a lot of people like to see that.

Here in the UK I organise and take part in a lot of tractor rides with my unrestored 1945 Farmall H. It creates far more intrest than the shiney painted one as everybody wonders if i am going to make it. About 50% of the tractors on runs in the UK are ex farm tractors. MJ

Its a tractor ride not a show-off contest. Lots go on the tractor rides with unpainted tractors. Some are so carefull they even wash them every day dont worry just ride and enjoy.

Take along a good chain, or a towrope.

You might just be the hero for one of those beauties.

The guy that has the shiny green keeps telling me the same thing, he's just in it for a good time, so i suppose that maybe the way i'll roll w/ it too. don't know that i'll go, but won't feel bad if i do. kinda thinking on it, i'm gutting our house, so i took a barge box of plaster to the landfill yesterday, that ~25 mile round trip was about enough fun, especially w/ the last ~6 in the rain.

i'll try to get a pic up.

Sure enough, there will a few in the crowd who say..."Look at that POS going there." And there will be a bunch more turn to their kid and say...."hey, you see that old Ford tractor....I wish I had one, grandpa had one just like it and I used to drive it!"

I well remember a farmer in the village where I grew up..got caught drunk driving so many times, they finally took his license. So, he started driving his 3000 Ford like a car! He went everywhere on it...thought nothing of a 20 mile drive to town...still drunk too! He fell off one time and the tractor ran over him....broke a few ribs..thank god the disc was raised. He died maybe 20 years ago...past 75 then.

Hi Guy,

I don't do the "all get in a pile" thing myself, but would guess you are missing the point completely.

I think it is about being around old tractors and other people; not a beauty queen contest, or "my dad can whip your dad" thing.

The word "social" comes to mind. If ya like old tractors and people, I'd jump in the frey and just plain have a good time.

Allan

Go for it, your Ford will definately show that she has worked hard to earn her keep. I kinda wonder sometimes about those tractors that look better than the day they were born. I don't mind seeing a few scuff marks on them because each little scuff has a story to tell.

Ya gotta remember, Everybody is different. There will be some people who would never restore a tractor if it ran OK. They would love to think of how hard the ole bomb worked gettin the grey (or rust colored) hairs on her. Yes some will look down, but the real people will appreciate it the way you bring it if it is sound mechanically. IMHO. The idea of these things should be to enjoy, not get jealous or think you are better than a person with less money or other priorities in life.

If its mechanically sound I would do it. I lovew to get my tractors out and drive them even though they are all still in their work clothes.
