We call them axe-mattocks because of the axe like blade on one side. Also have pick-mattocks with the point. Handy tools but can make you tired in short order. Especially in rocky, rooted soil.

The others are correct. As far as the age... I've used one and they get old fast.

Actually what you have there is a cutter mattock. A pulaski axe is a different animal entirely. Check these links and you'll see what I'm talking about.

It is called a "mattock" in these parts and I can't imagine paying $85 for one!!! They sure sell for a lot less than that at the local hardware store!!

This tool works really well in cutting small cedar trees at or below ground level.

Looks like a pulaski axe -- sell new for around $85. I think a pick handle might fit, if you want a work out. They are used by the US FOREST SERVICE to construct hand dug fire lines -- Rick

I have no idea how old that particular one is, or why it would be stamped "oliver", but you can buy a brand new one just like it (only with a handle) at any decent hardware store. It's called a polaski, and is a combination axe & hoe, used a lot in building fire lines, clearing brush, etc.
