I got a new tow hitch to bolt to the frame of my "88 Chevy K2500 because the old one is rusting through. I noticed that the frame is rusty but shows no signs of rust through. Should I bolt the new hitch right up or should there be some type of plating added to the truck frame? The steel seems thin but Im not sure that is bad or not.

I agree with Landlord1072. Clean it well enough around the mounting area to see if there are any cracks or thin spots. It its a light duty hitch, you might get away with it. If its a class-III or IV, I wouldn't attach one to any frame that showed rust without making absolutely sure of the strength and re-inforcing appropriately.

Be safe, trailers can do all sorts of nasty things if they come loose.

You should have at least the last few feet of the frame blasted (or use an air scaler) so you can inspect for cracks and measure wall thickness in a few spots. I would draw the line at 80-85% of the original frame thickness and add plating accordingly. If you had enough corrosion to destroy that hitch your frame can't be any better.

Tweeter,

They bolt right to the frame.

I know they bolt right up to the frame. I'm asking if there is any reason to reinforce the frame on the 1988 K2500 before bolting the new one on.

Allan may not have read the question or answered what was asked, but he wasn't rude. I think it only fair to back off a guy that posts so much valuable information on an almost daily basis. Everybody misses the point sometimes. I, for one, look for Allan's name in the new postings because you can count on something good.

I would at least take a wire brush and remove the rust. Paint the area and when installing the new hitch, grease the bolt shanks and reinstall. If you don't try and prevent the rust from coming back or spreading, you or someone else will have problems later on.
