I have a 6.0 HP tecumseh on a lawnmower that will not start, just kicks back when trying to start.
I put new key on shaft at flywheel but still almost broke my finger yesterday.
Any suggestions as to what makes this thing kick back like that?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will use process of elimination to hopefully fix the problem.

When you put the key in did the flywheel nut get tight enough not to shear again?

this won"t fix your kickback but something to try

get one of those big snowblower handles for the end of your pullstring, you can get a good grip with your whole hand instead of wrecking tendons in a few fingers

If this is a pushmower, make sure the blade is on and is tight.

Make sure you have the correct flywheel key. Tecumseh makes 2 or 3 and they aren"t interchangeable.

Timing can do this also. Incorrect points gap (if it has them), or incorrect coil to flywheel gap.

Overadvanced timing will do it. It is adjusted with either the point's gap, or by loosening the magneto assembly and rotating - it has slotted screw holes for adjustment.
