My father who is 85 underwent by-pass surgery this past Wed. After the surgery and while getting him off the pump and back to his own heart he had trouble. Blood pressure got very low and o2 level in the blood dropped very low. We thought we might loose him but as the doctor put it, he made an unexplained turn around( I call it power of prayer) and did fine. Except, as he began to come out of the anesthesia he said he could not see and appeared to be totally blind. Doctors say they cannot explain it. CT scan and MRI have ruled out a stroke. Any one have any experience with a simular situation. My father now can see some images such as a hand placed within in a couple inches of his eyes.We hope this will continue to improve, as this was a person that had driven to town to have coffee with his friends the day before surgery. Just wondering what lays ahead.

Just got a chance to check this site. I would like to thank each of you for your kind words and prayers. I spoke to one of my dad's nurses, who said the same thing happened to her father and his sight returned in nine weeks. We are hopeing for the best. I feel very blessed to still have my father with us, with or without sight.

My Grandmother had a similar experience at the age of 91, she did get her sight back to about 80% of what it was to start with and she lived a very full life for 7 years after the surgery. I will say a prayer for your Dad and for your family. Take care. CL

CL

That is encouraging. I hope my father will have simular results. It seems odd to me that his surgeon indicated this side effect was not heard of but I'm hearing more and more case that are just like my Dads. Maybe it's too frightening to discuss up front.

Sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, problems from surgery can affect both young and old.

The twenty-something daughter of a friend of mine lost her sight after heart surgery.

Her health is MUCH better, but she never regained her sight, outside of a sensation of light or dark.

Unfortunately, as good as modern medicine is, there are always risks and unforseen complications for any surgery.

BillD1,
Thanks for you reply. My brother is a CRNA. He says to have a stroke that effects partial vision in one eye is not that unusual, but has not ever witnessed the complete loss of sight in both eyes as our father has had happen. I guess that during heart surgury, you are put under so deep the brain does suffer some. I guess more in some cases tham others.
