So heres the story. I own an gravely ride tractor with an 18hp briggs and stratton engine. So I began to start it just like always (normally takes a couple tries) when suddenly the motor stopped turning over when trying to start. Basically all I can hear now when I turn the key is the "whrrrrr " of the starter spinning. What exactly is the problem???

Any help would GREATLY be apprieciated!

Bob

A lot of the Briggs engines use a nylon or plastic gear on the starter. SOME engines also have a plastic ring gear. Sounds like one or the other has worn out. Not too bad a job to replace the starter gear. Have to pull the starter out to do it, though.

When my 18 horse B&S started doing that, it was the plastic gear on the starter had worn down and would not engage the flywheel. Common problem on these engines.

Not expensive parts and can be done yourself. If you have same engine as mine, the back bolt that holds the starter on is a bear to get off due to where it's at. Spring can take off flying on you when you take the starter apart if you're not careful. If you can get starter off yourself you can easily see if that is the problem. May just take starter to your local mower repair and they can fix easily.

THANKS, yea thats exactly what I figured happened, it sound like the starter wasnt engaging the flywheel. Yet I ruled that out because I assumed it was metal and that it would be difficult to wear or strip. Thanks again! Ill let everyone know if that was my problem.
