NEBRASKA COWMAN, YOU SAID "IF I MESSED UP THE TINY GEARS"; IS THAT THE ONES BETWEEN THE ROTOR AND THE POINTS? WHERE SHOULD THE ROTOR BE POINTING WHEN COMPRESSION PUSHES YOUR FINGER OUT NO. 1 SPARK PLUG HOLE? ALSO, EXPLAIN THE MARKS ON THE CRANKSHAFT V BELT PULLY, THERE ARE TWO SETS.

yes, the little gears between the points and the rotor. (What happens if this internal timing is wrong then spark occurs with the rotor pointing off between tension terminals and nowhere to go)There is a notched tooth that lines up, I can't remember for sure what it matches but there are two marks where the rotor slides on. one is for clockwise (for your H) the other is counter clockwise (ignore that one) It's a little tricky but once you look at it I think you will figure out what I mean. Once you get that right then the magneto must also be timed to the engine. But here you are in luck cuz the coupler can only be engauged correct or half turn off. Yes, if you turn the engine over slowly and find top dead center on compression stroke for #1 cylinder then the rotor should be pointing at the 2 o'clock position and that will be where you attach #1 plug wire then continue around clockwise 3-4-2. Timed correctly the impulse should click just as the motor rocks over TDC or slightly after, never before. If "Expert" were half as smart as he lets on he is he should have been able to tell you that. Gas engines are not complicated.

You can get it timed at your IH dealer, or get it timed with a I & T or IHC service manual. You can blow a hole in your piston if it is not correctly timed. Your tractor will not run if it"s not timed. Mr. Expert from Case IH U.S.A.
